Title: What would you pay for.....
Post by: charri42 on 03 December 2006, 00:32
Hi folks,

I've been offered a (potentially) cheap Gti.

Its a fleet car being defleeted early at a friends work.

2005 / 05
Red, manual
FVSH - 3 services, last at 49k
Poverty spec - 3dr red - i.e. bog standard - looks a bit bland
Good order throughout, only a few minor stone chips, no scuff, tyres good, brakes pads and discs just done.

Not what I would choose, but I wasn't really looking.

Any ideas on a good price? It'd have to be a great price, as I wasn't really looking for one and I wouldn't choose this spec, but if its tempting..... who knows?

Tornado Red looks really nice mate... every one I have seen looks spot on.  Although I have to say the colour didn't look too good on the Mk3 and Mk4, but looked fantastic on the Mk2.  As for price, I'd look at prices on ebay and autotrader, account for the high mileage - basically 50k - and go low as possible giving your reasons.  At least its a starting point to negotiate a price.  What options does it have?  If none, I'd say 13k - 11-12k if I am pushing it. Put it this way, i doubt they will sell it for more than 13k in an auction.

that would be an almost too good to be true bargain, considering the car is probably only a year and a half old. then again they probably get tax allowances for it.

i mean thats 8k off the price of the same car if u buy it new and maybe spend a little to heal those minor chips.

u probably wont use it as much as they did so in 3 years time, u would have turned a high mileage car into an average one. you could possibly sell it for about 10k if its in decent condition.

i suppose there could be wear and tear issues depending on how it was driven.

The problem I am finding is that there are no cars of such mileage on Ebay / Autotrader to compare with. I should have pointed out that its a stop gap for me, I change every 6 months and do a low mileage, so I would be re-selling early summer 07 and it wouldn't have more than 55k.

The attraction is that it wouldn't need a service, consumables are all A1 (new tyres and brakes) and its all covered by warranty.

Downside is I'm not a massive fan of red and the little wheels - but hey, it still looks good.

Glass' says about 11-13k trade, I reckon @ 12 it would be a bargain and when I came to sell it should be quite easy as it'd be the cheapest on Autotrader.

I'll let you know if I get lucky
