It does seem that i will be now changing the Golf at the end 2004/ beg 2005.
My budget is between ?18,000 and ?25,000.
My shortlist is:
Porsche Boxster
BMW 330CI Sport
BMW 330d (due to potential mileage)
Mercedes 320CLK
However, i would absolutely love a BMW M5 c. ?25k on a W/X plate. ;D
Not too fussed about insurance as i can afford up to ?2k per year.
What would any of you think of the above list and what would you do?
-
R32 ;D
-
I wondered how long it would take for someone to say that!!!
?20k + for a golf is a lot of cash for, well a golf. I want prestige ;)
Truth is, who would want a Golf over a 400bhp super saloon?
And the 330 and the M5, and probably the boxster are quicker....
-
get two cars? (one a vr6 or something.. lol)
-
Heard a lot of people saying the R32's a monster but they cant put up with it as a daily driver.
If I didnt have any kids for 18-25k I think a decent 911 my dream car. But as I have kids then probably an Audi S4 or an R8 is it? or maybe a Range Rover or a Merc M class, decisions, decisions I do feel sorry for you pimpster!! :P
I dont like beemas myself but as you is da Pimpster they would probably suit ya! ;D
-
25k ??
i think an Audi RS4, 380bhp , 0-60 in 4.9 secs :o
-
If i could find an RS4 for ?25k i so would!!!!
I must admit to saying screw the prestige used car, how about a deposit down on the next Mk5 fast golf and be one of the first to have one....
I'm a friggin nightmare, always changing my mind.
however, i'm forever dreaming: 400bhp, RWD, hmmm. doughnuts......
-
RS6 I meant, thats the car, but 25K I doubt you could buy one. Get a Porsche go on screw the beema, nobody likes a beema driver.
Once in a lifetime do you get to own a 911.
Anybody can get a Golf, after all they are 'peoplescar'
-
RS6 - nice!!!
As you can tell i just want power and quality but not a headache (hence no EVO 8). Its lovely to have choices but its frustrating because if you spend ?25k and get the wrong car you'll kick yourself. My missus has an old BMW compact now and quite likes the new one, so maybe if she gets a 325ti that would deal with the 'fast' bmw part and get a porsche. God knows what i'll get but i'll keep you all updated. i'd rather wait and get something s**thot though than rushing.
My mate said i should get a Ferrari 348 but i dont fancy the ?2,500 a year service and clutch bill!!!!
-
Ferrari, nice but its gonna hurt the wallet allright!
TVR, yup TVR's your car the reliability issues have been cleaned up a lot and for what you pay, its supercar performance for small money, u gotta be tempted ???
-
No way mate - 2 guys i work with have TVR and both have actually spent more time in the garage than on the road - 1's got a Griffith 500 that is fantastic and the others got a T350 that is just brutal.
However both are just a nightmare reliability wise. electrics and trim being the worst. good for a seconf car perhaps but mine has to be my daily drive.
How about a Lotus Carlton.....?!
-
I'll be looking to spend ?20k in about 12 months time - to replace my GTi. I'm considering a Honda S2000....
-
Lovely car mate - bit tricky in the wet by all accounts and hard work but i think they're one of the 10 best looking cars on the market. and the engines phenomenal. A fantastic choice if you get it.
You're definitely have to keep us updated if you do.
-
Lotus Carlton? Nah if youre going Lotus get the Esprit, got an idea chap, a Noble, anything coming in at 25k yet? awesome motors 'proper' car!
what do ya reckon?
-
Clio V6?
/me runs far far away. :o
what about an Evo VIII FQ330
-
I'd definitely see if I could stretch to an Audi RS6.
Point-to-point, it kills M3s, M5s, Scoobies, and just about every 911 except the Turbo and GT3.
Otherwise, what about the new Audi A3 3.2 Quattro with the DSG 'box?. Twin clutches. Computer automatically preselects 2nd when you're in 1st, 3rd when you're in 2nd and so on. Uninterrupted forward thrust. Superb!
Are Audi Planning to release a new S3, by the way? Will it be a turbo'd 3.2? (Here's hoping!)
Nick.

I'd say go with the Lotus Carlton if you can find a good one, an M5 if you can't. The quattro system of the RS6 is all well and good, but with all that power in a big saloon, the power really should only come from the back wheels. Might be ever so lightly slower point to point (but by much less than you'd think if the M5 pilot is a bit handy), but powerslides > 4 wheel drifts every time :D
Other possibilities I would consider for under 25K would include
BMW 330i Sport
Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 2 (or even a Final Edition). Really would work best as a second car but christ, what a second car.
VW Golf R32 - does everything the S3 does but does it better and for 4 grand less. I have no idea why anyone would take an S3 over this.
Clio V6 - just cos it's completely off its tits. Came third in evo COTY aswell, beating off the 360CS and M3 CSL.
Damn i'd be tempted to take the Integrale. It manages to make both the most and the least sense at the same time. An all time classic imo.
-
A quattro system is ideally suited to the power :D
-
If you wanna think a little different, have a go in a Holden GTS. Its essentially a big Omega, but it has a 340bhp 5.7 litre V8 and six speed 'box from the Corvette ZR1
They're also quite tuneable - my old man had a blower bolted onto his from new by the importer (Linden Special Vehicles) and its now producing 532bhp and 500+lb ft of torque.
There's only about 120 of them in the country, so you'd be driving something that your average man in the street wouldn't see everyday.
Basically, you've got a fast, comfortable, spacious, driftable, rare motor. Its essentially a reliable four door TVR! Find one and have a blast, should be able to pick up a standard GTS for that moolar, no problems.
-

That would explain all those quattro F1 cars you see then.
-
here we go again bodhi, i'm not gonna argue about front wheel/rear wheel/4 wheel drive again.
whatever you say, i'll believe you ;)
did you manage to get your ashtray out in the end? :D :D :D :D
-
Oi thats technical sh!t MR VR6.
-
If you have any technical questions Mod then ask Bodhi, he looks it all up in Evo mag :-*
-
I'll remember that for future reference.
If I had the cash it would be R32, blue, 5door.
very very nice.

F1 cars aren't road cars now are they?
Some of the very fast Jap cars are 4 wheel drive, i think that speaks volumes for 4 wheel drive system.
-
4 wheel drive doesn't give you any extra grip thats why range rovers and the like never use it for going up muddy hills.
If your gonna get technical then you better get a mid engined car anyway as this offers the best weight distribution.
-
4 wheel drive is safer in a road car, especially if the engine is putting out 400bhp, and will certainly grip better.
-
There is no special need for a car to be mid engined for perfect weight distribution - BMW manage a 50:50 split weith every car they produce. But on the whole yes, mid-engined (or even front mid-engined) is the way to go.
4wd is safer yes. But if safety is a prime concern you shouldn't really be buying a car with 400bhp under the bonnet. You'd be much happier with a Volvo.
-
You like your Beemers then
Are the ashtrays easy to remove? ;)
-
Yes. And their owners have more than two jokes.
-
But then again I remember when audi entered touring car racing a few years back and they had to carry extra weight as the 4 wheel drive system was making them win every race.
All the other manufactures complained that they had an unfair advantage.
-
Yep, it'll be lovely when you can afford one ;)
-
Yes. And their owners have more than two jokes.
Some jokes are just meant to last :-*
*cough cough* i need another ciggy but my ashtray is full :D

I'm not surprised all their competitors had front-wheel drive. BMW left a year or two before Audi joined, and they also had to carry a weight penalty.
-
they had to carry extra weight because they had worked out how to get the ashtray out.

Touring Cars don't have ashtrays dumbass.
-
if they did they would know how to get them out.
Also good at pit stops as they know where the jacking points are.
DUMBASS
-
To quote Pulp Fiction....
English Motherf**k*r. Do You Speak it?
-
what you on about you f**king muppet?
-
i would get a volvo 850turbo once they kick in my god there fast :o
-
Yeh 'once' being the word, massive turbo lag!
How about the original Audi Quattro, if were getting retro, mmm that or the Lancia????????????
-

You know about touring cars too?
I was wondering Bodhi , could you tell me how to turn my lights on? :D
-
What if the touring car driver wants a f-a-g?
-
I'd give him your phone number.
-
Nah i'm only bent when i'm talking to you Bodgi :-*

Well i missed the last 20 posts due to being absent/not noticing, so here goes the reply.
Nice one bodhi on the lotus carlton. I severely love em but the chance to get a straigh one is rare. dont fancy a new set of turbos as is possible. Nice car tho. A bit of a daddy by all accounts.
330i Sport is definitely an option to get a new-ish car with poke.
Lancia Delta- make your heard turn, but have you seen the interior - oh my god. rice paper, papier mache and egg shell construction. left hand drive too. no thanks. Nice to have for a weekend.not to own.
Golf R32 - this may be a golf forum, but i'm a bit down on it. looks dull having seen a few, great seats and steering wheel - tho a bit thick having sat in one, but it doesnt have that 'wow' factor. also if i got an S3 i would jsut spend ?15k on one as thats what you can get them for and R32's are ?22k and above. Revo chip the S3 to 270bhp for ?500 or so and muller an R32 for ?10k less. Also prefer the looks of the S3 i have to say. Nicer interior too.
Clio V6 - well its quick, but its still a clio inside with no room and looks like a barry boys car. As my missus said - you'd look like a complete tit in it.
Cheers S11 EPS on the HSV idea. I hadnt really thought about it. My old mans lives in OZ and when i went out there one of his friends let me drive his HSV. WHAT A BEAST!!!! nice. minus mpg figures but so much fun. Bit nasty on the interior and thats where the M5 is well nice.
4wd v fwd v rwd debate:
4wd: quickest drive for going point to point. loads of grip and balance.
fwd: nice and safe. thats all there is to say.
rwd: scary but great great fun. my choice but i'll probably kill myself.
The rest of the posts have inane dribble by a load of beeatches!!! nah just joking. keep up the fighting. handbags away tho....

Aye that's why I said it would make a great second car the Integrale. Then you can just look on the dodgy interior construction part of the fun. I've heard the standard stereos go pretty loud tho, so you can soon mask all the creaks and focus on thraping its knackers :)
I'd honestly say judging by your responses have a look for a decent Lotus Carlton/M5. With your budget you should be able to afford a decent Carlton if one pops up, if not you should be able to find an honest early new shape M5 for around 25k. I've never been hugely impressed by Boxsters - there are far too many on the roads. If you want to go down the Prosche route I'm sure you could find a 993 shape 911 for your budget. And, like you say, the 330i is a good option for a nearly new car with lots of poke. Make sure it has the 18 inch M-Sport wheels tho. They look the shiznit :D
