Hi all, I bought a 1.8T GTI last week and I'm really happy with it so far, but I've noticed that the engine temperature fluctuates between about 65°C and 90°C (90°C when stationary and 65°C when driving normally). I'm not sure if it's a thermostat or sensor problem (since this usually seems to cause flicking between 0 and 90, not 65 and 90) or actaully running cold for some other reason.
Any help would be great.

I would look at changing the coolent temp sensor and also the thermostat.
-
Thanks Paul, I think I'll get those changed and see what happens
-
It'll 99% be your thermostat. The stat is letting coolant through to your radiator too early thus cooling too much when moving along. Should cost about £12 from GSF. Fairly easy to change as long as you've got small hands!!.

thanks mk316valver, I'll change the thermostat b4 I try the temp sensor then

It was the thermostat. Replaced it and it's working perfectly, but it cost a shocking 200 New Zealand dollars!

A bit steep my friend. Never mind, at least it's sorted. Maybe you should question them?. It took me 30 mins to change mine, you don't necessarily have to drain the coolant off as long as you're ready with the new one to shove quickly into the block. I lost about 1 litre so just re-filled it. Good luck.

I'll definitely do it myself next time.ÂÂÂ
- $100 for labour
- $70 for thermostat
- $20 for new seal
- $10 to drain coolant
The bastards probably would have charged me an extra hours labour to find the problem if I hadn't told them it was the thermostat, so thanks for the advice.

No worries mate, enjoy your summer!
