Hi all, Just about to buy my third GTI and im torn between buying a late Mk2 or a MK3 2ltr. Previous two were mk2's (8v) and body rot killed them off. Prob due to them sitting outside in all weathers! Is the extra performance of the 16v Mk2's worth the extra insurance, and are the Mk3's any better performance and roadholding wise? Would appreciate forum members views. Danny. :nerd:

Arrow.
Get a mk2 otherwise you will regret it. AS stated in many books and on many forums, the mk3 was the worst gti made in history. (although i am sure a few will debate that)

Thanks for comment arrow, wot about 8v versus 16V. I know the 8v has more torque    at bottom end of rev range. Is there any differences in the reliability of the two engines?? Danny.

Do a search for 8v vs 16v in the mk2 section, it's been covered more times than jenna jamesons face.

hello and welcome
mark 2 8v or 16v (16v if poss) but if you are going to buy a mark 3 it has to be a 16v at least

Mk 3's dont handle as well as a Mk2. However the 16v ABF engine is the best!
Also the Mk3 is more comfortable and generally has more extras like ABS and air-con.
If you want a balls out boy racer go for the Mk2 and spend thousands like Slick (Pedro) on making it go fast!
If you want a good all round car that isnt going to rust out then go for a Mk3.

Welcome to the forum
I agree with Len - the 16v ABF engine is the best! Although only when it's in a mk2
I don't agree with the boy racer bit though...

welcome to the forum hun
Dinx

A) MK2's are not boy racers cars.
B) They do not rust out.
C) They don't cost thousands to make them go fast
D) They are easier to fix when something does go wrong.
E) They are cheap and easy to mod
F) Perhaps one of the best hot hatches ever made
