Thanks jv
A quick introduction. This is my second MK2 8v Gti. My first was a small bumper G reg l bought back in 1994, i had her for about 8 years before l went all grown up in an Audi for about 2 years. Got bored of the reliability and nothing to do, so l bought this H reg 8v Gti. I have owned her for about 3 years but she hasnt been on the road for the last 14 months, since some tosser in a transit van smashed into me, he still hasnt admitted liability but it should all be sorted one way or the other by january. Hopefully i can recover some of my 9 years ncb my insurance took away, and i will be able to use the golf again as a second car.
Just before she went off the road i sorted the head gasket including a skim and a cam belt. The fan belt snapped on me on the way home from work one day and i didnt notice the warning light flashing until it was too late. After the engine was back together she ran great but always a little hot, i want to fit a new radiator and maybe an external oil cooler.
At this stage she is standard in light blue metalic, though l have just fitted the following: bilstein suspension with 40mm drop, grooved/drilled/vented disks with new wheel bearings, new cv boots, and front lower suspension arms and track rod ends. i havent had her on the road yet but i am sure she will be as smooth as silk. I refitted the original rear brake calipers, and they are starting to sieze a little so i will up-rate them to mk3 items.
So this is how she is now.
For the next stage, her bodywork is still fairly tidy with only a few spots of rust, though the last job will be to get her painted. my next major task is to sort the cosmetics of the engine and engine bay, i will keep you posted.
someone let me know how to add pics please, i have some pics saved in a yahoo album.
Cheers
Kegs

the cleaning and a bit of paint on the bock has started. will it all be worth it, i hope so. I have relocated some cables etc into the chassis legs. god only knows how i will clean the gearbox without removing engine or box from the car, but i will give it a good go 8)

Righto, time for an up-date, things have been going my waty a little lately, (touch wood) and l finally won my car smash claim from july 06 hoorah, just waiting for a wee cheque now.
The old girl is coming along nicely, l have a new rad and reconditioned alternator and starter sorted, and a lot of stuff has been grit blasted and painted. I relocated as much of the cables etc as I could to the chassis legs and have spent a lot of time cleaning the bay and engine/box. As usual loads more i could have done, but i just havent go the space in my garage for an engine so it has stayed put and i have done my best (ish).
Also got a mk3 rocker cover ready to be blasted and painted, does this go straight on ?? can someone let me know cheers guys

Update. Finally threw everything back together, and as you can see the mk3 rocker cover fitted. I need to replace the round crank breather filter on the top of the rocker with a mk3 one to neaten it up, i had to cut the steel mounting bracket that supports the ISV, but the mk3 rocker goes straight on. I got an FK induction kit at dubfreeze and made a heat shield to try and stop some of the heat affecting the cars performance.
And after 18 months off the road i put her in for an MOT last friday and she passed. Going to sort out a classic insurance policy at the end of the month so i can use her for shows and weekend bimbles. Next up is the paintwork

after a bit of graft, and a few quid spent over the last couple of years, l am sad to say that l will have to sell the golf. I just cant get insurance for a second car, so she has to go, cant believe it, l am gutted. when l get the courage l will post in the for sale section.
absolute bummer

before you sell.
you want to ask martin in the insurance section as he`ll be able to do you a classic car policy which works out quite cheap. and they class classics as older than 15 years which yours is

tried martin already, i had two claims in 2005, one which l lost though not my fault, and until that doesnt count l am a leper
cheers mate, thanks for trying

do you still have this car for sale?

No pics at the moment, will update later on this week. Still scratching my head as to what to do with her, but i cant afford to insure her till next year so i think i will sell. Anyhow despite passing the MOT back in March the rear brake calipers are starting to stiffen, obviously because she hasnt been driven. Had a few false starts getting the body up to scratch, but i am getting there, the bodywork is great really just the usual small rust patches on the tailgate and i have removed the wing aerial. Thought about getting my mate to insure it and then driving on my daily driver insurance, but this feels a bit dodgy, what do people reckon ???

cant get much done to this car when it wont stop RAINING !!!!!! what is going on. Anyhow, managed to get some paint on the car but still got a bit to do. Whan i finally finish it, this week i hope, i will then need to get a ll the plastic exterior trim back to black. The best stuff i have found is by Auto Glym and its a black die in a tin you spray onto your plastic. You have to mask off the car, and the stuff can leach under the masking tape but it gives a like new finish. So anyway a couple of pics on how shes looking at the minute
