At the moment i have a completely standard Golf GTI 8v. I want to put some alloy wheels on it and lower it as well. However i dont want to do any arch work can anyone advise what size alloy wheels and how much to lower it by without any rubbing in the arches?

I'm running 30/30 drop on Eibachs with 17"s on 205/40/17 rubber.
You can still go over speed bumps without problem and the ride sits sweetly.
If you want a fixed ride hight then shox and springs that are set would be the best answer. I'm just having Wietec ones fitted in a couple of weeks. Wietec also do a great set that is a coilover at the front and an adjustable plate on the back that lets you run from 30mm-90mm!! This set costs £325 and is very good quality. You could run any size wheel you wanted from 13s-19s as the height is fully adjustable.
Where abouts are you as -----> http://www.stormdevelopments.co.uk/Contact.html are in Aldermaston nr Reading and are top chaps....they went through what my needs for the car where and what system fitted these and my budget

I run 17's with 215/40 rubber and not lowered at the mo.
With the standard soft suspension I do get some wheel rub on the rear (from the leading edge of the bumper)
So with 205/40 you should be fine lowering.
Any larger wheels than the 17's will require arch work and a speedo recalibration.

this debate can go on for ever, ive got 17s 215/40s and mines lowered 60mm with no scrubbin!
-
It usually does!
My scrubbing only happens when I get a full load in the back! 2 hefty blokes plus a boot full of luggage! And my old standard springs are going soft. So I'm only guessint that a lowered car may have scrubbing problems.
May also be to do with the offset of my wheels so dont know!
Does anybody know how I can measure my wheel offset?
Good to know from you slim-dub that the same tyres are fine on 60mm drop!

the only thing that looks like its had done is the camber angle slightly adjusted, still it sits pretty sweet and imo looks the nuts, much more aggressive!

im running on 215/40/17s and lowered 60mm on spax shocks and springs. only scrubbing is fully laden in the back. the other gti is lowered about 40mm on 205/40/17s and no probs at all with that one (when its running lol)
