Hi All,
Following a 2 yr period of Boxster ownership, the lack of practicality and the flippin rising property market mean I need to reduce my monthly outlay on motors. The Boxster has to go. It hurts, but 2 years of porsche ownership was a dream for me.
Anyway I am posting to ask a few questions. I am hoping to test drive a gti this week.
1. Is there any evidence to show that the 5 door verions are achieving lesser residuals?
2. Is there any evidence that Candy white cars are achieving lesser residuals?
3. Has anyone bought their car on line? I had a look at the motorprovider website and they seem to be selling new cars from c. 17.5k
4. Are there any facelifts planned prior to the replacement in 08?
5. What are the must have options? I know this is subjective but bare in mind I dont want to spend more then 1k on options.
Thanks all and if anyone is considering a boxster please feel free to ask questions!!

If you are worried about residuals, I wouldn't go for candy white - nice to look at but not nice to buy. As for 5-doors, I really don't know although I wouldn't have thought you would lose any money apart from maybe the extra price you pay for them.
-
Hello and welcome. Only spending 1k on options go for manual, xenons, high line computer, armrest ipod connection and if you can stretch to it winter pack as heated seats are great this time of year, multi function steering wheel.
My car cost 24.5k just over a year ago with average miles I can only get 16k trade in now even though it's a high spec. The reason I've been given is it's because it white and no body wants a white cars. Still think the GTI looks best in white.
There is talk of a face lift soon or evan a MK VI. Hope thats of help
-
thanks guys.
Bully- Since seeing the evo car in 3 door white it has been my preference but I assumed that they were not as desirable as I have never seen one on the road. The average options list on a porsche amounts to 5k on average. Obviously there are the must haves when you have a porsche like leather etc but I know people that have spent 10k on options and hardly any more on a trade in than someone who spent 2k.

I wouldn't go for leather my self in the GTI because I love the retro feel of the intalagos cloth. The 18's are good value for £500 to. I've never seen another GTI in white either and I don't regret buying it. It's funny that when you trade a car in with Hi spec you get no extra for them but when you buy one second hand with spec you pay more for it. Dealer ship don't you just love them. Have you driven a GTI yet?

Black seems to be the "blue eyed boy"
2. Is there any evidence that Candy white cars are achieving lesser residuals?
Dont know - I love the White but I didn't have the balls to get one!
3. Has anyone bought their car on line? I had a look at the motorprovider website and they seem to be selling new cars from c. 17.5k
Yes a few have here with differing experiences - spec missing etc - read on!
4. Are there any facelifts planned prior to the replacement in 08?
2007 MY just came out so I think your safe there!
5. What are the must have options? I know this is subjective but bare in mind I dont want to spend more then 1k on options.
18" Wheels, Armrest, Large computer +++?
-
Just bought import thru simpledeal.co.uk. Good service, full uk spec 10 week dely time, £ 2400 saving on personalised spec.
Best options are 1.metallic paint, steel grey is very stylish 2. armrest 3. xenons as std lights are poor. I have gone for philips silverstar as an upgrade.
Hope this is useful?

Sorry didn't realise you were asking about options as well.... when i bought my 06 plate I told the dealer that I would not be keeping it for longer than 12 months so he advised me to avoid as many options as possible as they wouldn't really add value when it came to resale.  I therefore dropped the xenons and a couple of other things and got a Diamond Black, 3-door manual with 18" Monza's and a highline computer.  I sold the car 7 months later with 15k on the clock for £17k via ebay.  Probably would have got a bit more if I had waited but still reckon it was a good price.  The dealers advice was sound - on this rare occasion!  I have also just ordered an Edition 30 Mk5 GTI with all options bar sunroof, DSG, 5-doors and the nasty   telephone prep... but I plan to keep it for a long long time.
-
thanks all.
the highline computer seems all the rage. is it just a normal on board computer telling you fuel stats etc?
taking one out tomorrow. I know it wont be as balanced as the porka but it is more practical.
cheers

i Think you will be quite surprised how balanced the gti is 200rrr, i would say its close to being par, you will see,if your going for extra options, get one with dsg gearbox, 18 monza II,and leather, high line comp.Even its above budget, there are loads on near as dam it new on volkswagen.co.uk used car finder, your local dealer can and will sell u any car on the 2nd hand list whether its on their lists or not. i bought an o5 fully loaded inc sat nav with every other extra there is except sunroof, with 5000 miles on the clock for £23000, mint condition, now im not too sure i think £22000 is new basic version price so for your extra £1000 budget you can get more for your money and loose less on new car depreaction after 1 yr old. i will never buy brand new solely for that reason, i know mine now its 16 months old is not lost as much in depreation, recently told by dealer i would get £19000 trade in if i wanted to change up to edition 30 or r32

tell me about the property prices! thats what ruins all my car dreams!
was your boxter the new shape? ie 2004 onwards or the 96 - 04 one?
must be painful waving goodbye to that car.
-
ntg,
it was last of the old shape. I got a good deal (unusual for porsche) as it was an ex demo and they wanted to shift it. Its not going to be easy to hand over the keys as it is the purest car I have ever driven and looks great. 2 years porsche ownership is better than none. it costs me a lot to run though.

Don't think the performance will be as big a difference as you think what model was your Boxster?
-
Bully,
It depends what you mean by performance. The boxster (2.7) wont be quicker and I actually except better pull from low revs with the golf, perhaps more responsive in general. But what I dont expect is as good steering or balance or the feeling of being planted to the road. I may be wrong and I want to be wrong. Will report back this afternoon. test booked for 1oclock.

It will be a very good compromise along with the house. I'm dreaming of a 911 my self one day...
-
I bought a Candy White 3 dr as i thought it looked awesome when i saw the demo the dealer had.
I was trying to sell it recently and im pretty sure the colour did count against me with 2 people calling saying that they loved white but their wives wouldnt let them buy the car - why they called me to tell me this im not sure!
It's totally up for you - short term yes you prob would get less for it selling it on, but there is a trend at the mo for fast cars in white - each new edition of Evo shows another supercar in white - the 911 GT3 cover being one that springs to mind.
If i were to buy it again would i go for another colour?? No ... ive only ever seen 1 other white one on the road, and the comments from people are always positive re the colour.
Only drawback is that it gets dirty VERY quickly!
Option-wise i wanted a few toys but not going overboard - went for 18's, highline, armrest, parking sensors and winter pack.
Keeping mine now, and going to speak to Revo about engine management etc to turn it into a proper sub-6 secs sleeper.
-
Well I just got back from VW. They thought I was a 'what car' mag mystery shopper which was funny. I dint deny it just to watch them sweat when I asked questions.
Anyway my first impressions of the interior were nice but a bit dull. I dont care much for logos and red piping etc but there is a lack of 'I am sitting on a performance car. I can see why the edition 30 one is going to be spiced up a bit.
It drove well for a hot match imo, better ride than c type r but as I expected its not a patch on the boxster from any aspect other maybe than low rev pull. I urge anyone with a ggti to try a boxster sometime and you will see what I mean within 1 min of driving it. felt as quick as Boxster although a much differernt power delivery. Also the gti it is very refined and smooth and I wished there was more engine and exhaust noise.
Overall though it is a good car and I am still keen for one. they offered me 3.7% discount but I recon I could get 4% easy.
I am tempted to try an ST now to compare.
200rrr
-
There's plenty of re-map potential and suspension mods so don't worry it's only a starting point. The ST looks like a nice car don't know if I could put up with all the rattles my self. White GTI v orange ST?
-
my best car ever? 205 gti. Rattles? oh yes!
maybe an st in white...mmm
-
Drove the new 2.7 as i was considering that when buying the golf, but just didnt enjoy the driving experience - horses for courses i guess.
Possibly it was too refined for me seeing that i had an integra type r at the time and was used to revving the nuts of it - over 8k rpm gear changes!
The golf won in the end due to overall practicality.
Wouldn't touch the St due to re-sale ... could have gotten a new one for £17k and that was 6 weeks after launch. Still a rare sight on the roads though and drove surprisngly well. Dealer was also a fair better experience the the VW guys which was even more surprising.
-
RC,
I am very surprised you didnt like the Boxster. I simply cant fault the driving experience. Its completely engaging. then again I havent driven the integra. My reference point was the ctr which was all over the place on poor surfaced roads.
Are you saying that practicality aside you would choose the golf over the boxster?
-
I test drove a Focus ST3 - It looked good on paper but it was a crap drive in comparison to the Golf
The "recaro" seats were a poor show - standard GTi seats are streets ahead in this department
Build quality made the golf look perfect
The handling was ok but nasty if you let of on a round about
The car salesman went
They look good though and I could get nearly 30% off as my farther was a manager at Fords
I still bought the Golf
-
yes i test drove my mates orange st-2 asbo, fuel ecomany appauling, resale is shocking, steering to light and feels like its gonna understeer under any kinda fast cornering, seats crap, couldnt get comfy seating position, although im 6ft 3, compared to the gti i have, it cant compete in any way shape or form, makes me smile as im driving seeing one of those fords, i think to myself, i could always swop for one of those, oh yes and give me another 4 grand if you want my gti!
-
The CTR is def nothing like the ITR - drove them back to back and they are like chalk and cheese.  One for the masses and one designed to be a unique vehicle - only 1500 were sold in the UK over 4 years.
For any of you guys who havent been in one or driven one go and have a go, nothing handles like it, and the engine is incredible - 1.8 NA engine pushing 190bhp - excellent considering it was desgned in 1996. ÂÂÂ
Been in a boxster on a track and it was pretty impressive, esp with the tail hanging out round the corners
-
the only thing wrong with a boxter is the 'roof up' look. apart from that its a great car but i think id prefer the more recent shape.
-
Since I last posted I have been trying to do a deal on various second hand 3 doors around a year old or so across the country. There are quite a few in steel grey so its been good fun negotating. I was also offered a new 3 door in red with the 18's and armrest for 19900 otr from my local dealer as well which I thought was pretty good. As things stand I am likely to do a deal tomorrow when I visit another local dealer who is keen to sell me an 06 with 18s for £18,600. I am pushing for £18,400. They own a porsche garage as well so I am hoing to offload the box on to them. I get the impression that business is quite quiet at the moment.
cheers all.
