Hi, I have owned my beloved MkII GTI for 5 yrs now and have decided I would like to extend the family!! Does anyone know what the bhp is for a MkIII VR6 and a MkIV GTI I.8 Turbo. Im thinking of going to view some and am interested in anything anyone has to say on the matter!!
Thanks x

dunno bout the vr6 but the 1.8 turbo mk4 is 150 BHP
-
vr6 is 190bhp mate very nice
-
MK3 VR isn't anywhere close to 190.
Its 174. None were higher than this from factory. It was the corrados that were 190.
As above for the mk4. Both a bit too comfortable for my liking, and only 150bhp from a turbo engine is wank, NA mk2 16vs are pushing 139 as standard. Gearing is too long on a VR in my opinion, but i would take the mk3 over the mk4 all day long.

it all depends what you want to do with it, if you just want something thats quick and leave it be then I would prob go for the VR6 but if you are willing to fettle the mark 4 a bit then you can achieve around the 200bhp mark with a remap.
for the money I would go for the Mark 3 VR6

obd1 vr6 golfs like mine were 174, but i thought the obd2 models were nearer 184??? i dont know much about the vr's even though ive got one.. what i do read is on the vr6oc and they seem to know there stuff on there... not that im bothered... mine was soft and comfy till i removed the seats, and ill agree slick id sooner drive the vr than my old mk4.......
but if you get a vr in a mk2........ now thats the kiddy....

i have always wondered whether a VR6 in a mark 2 would be really front heavy and understeery

The turbo choice is alot cheaper to upgrade the power, where the vr6 is gonna cost a fair bit to tease more power from it. I think the mk4 was a bit better looking than the mk3 aswell.

I agree, but only when the mk3's had some sensible work done to it. Mk4's do have a tendancy to look a bit chavvy if it's not done right... but, that's probably because of the amount of bits available for them.
I'd personally go for the vr6, but I'd say the 20vT's more reliable, cheaper to run and more tunable.

Well you have all given me a lot to think about. I have to admit Im leaning towards a vr6 - but the fun will be in the test drives! Ill keep you posted - thanks!

Could always try a 16v Mk3!!!
Can easily be tuned to 180bhp with a chip!
Something else to think about!

You can also find some early Mk4 turbos with a 180bhp engine.
The Mk4 is more modern, and the 1.8T engine is very tunable, but the Mk3 isn't a slouch.
The Mk3 16v is 150bhp (same as the later 1.8T) and lots of fun, the VR6 will give you a smile cos of the noise, but it's a heavy lump and only a little more power than the 16v.
The standard Mk4 looks very plain, but modded nicely, can look stunning. Seems very easy to go wrong modding the look of a Mk4 whereas you can get away with more on the Mk3.
It's up to you.

Mk 4's are Granny cars!
Oh and Mk 3's are boats!
