Title: Slightly confused
Post by: scaramachino on 23 November 2006, 18:50
I am having some trouble understanding my 1.8T Golf.

It has got an ASR button on the dash, which basically means that the car has traction control.

But, it has an ESP light on the display next to the speedo.

Does it have ESP or not????

Advice would be appreciated.....

Do you mean a three letter light in the rev counter - memory fails me but its not quite ESP but EMS or something.....  Anyway I believe this is to indicate that the drive by wire system is OK.  Mine has ASR which is displayed as a triangle with a circular arrow round it in the speedo section.  Not sure if thats the same as cars with ESP.  I may be talking sh!te....

I've also got ASR (Anti Spin Regulation) but on reading the manual it refers either to a EDL (IIRC) or ESP button, there is no mention of ASR - sometimes wonder if VW knew which car they were writing about when producing the manual.

I ran all the option codes on the data sticker in the boot and came up with
1AJ = anti-spin regulation (ABS/ASR/EDL) with electronic differential lock (EDL)

Ditto, I have ASR but the manual refers to ESP.  Weird.

i've got a GT TDI 150 which has is pretty much the same spec as your 1.8T GTI

the GT TDI's had ASR as standard and ESP was an option, but became standard in Apr 2002, the light is probably there so they could use the same dash panel.

mine has ASR but i've not seen the ESP light.
