I have a n reg 16v with a panel filter. I have read some threads with regards to altering the air intake pipe. My car doesnt really have nay induction noise, and I would like some more. How do I do this and where do I get the appropriate parts from. Cheers

Hi mate,
you could make a separate cold air intake but i haven't..
what i have done is remove the airbox, clean it out...then drill some holes in the wing side and front side of the bottom half of the airbox - you don't want to drill holes on the engine side as that is likely to let in hot air which is not good for induction..
Also remove the plastic internal intake pipe coming in from the air feed...mine wouldn't come out even when i pushed the retaining pins in...so i broke it off...
Not sure about performance gains but u'll get much better sound..

I opened up the airbox and looked in the bottom half and there is a pipe down there with a flap thing as well. Do I remove this? How does it come off. Looks like it should slide but it didn't!! Cheers
-
hmm not sure about the flap thing, maybe the 16v airboxes are different to the 8v...
someone else should know??

Just found out it called a trumpet. Have read mixed reviews whether to remove or not. Has anybody done it? Don't think I'm gonna drill the box yet though. Does anyone know how to get the trumpet out and whether it is actually worth doing. Cheers

just remove the air box and slap on a induction kit, my 16v sounds well sweet now and feels a bit more responsive........make sure you hool up a cold air feed!

Apparantly you can get the same noise without drilling the airbox and adding a K&N. Not sure what to remove though. Its called a trumpet or something. Had a look in the airbox and can't really see what is mean't. Also I've heard that you can change the stock air feed for a aftermarket one. Will this make a difference? I need an idiots guide to modding the airbox!!!

Just replacing your panel filter with a K&N Panel won't make any difference to the sound mate. Drilling the airbox and removing the trumpet will. You'll get a much throatier sound.
Replacing with an induction kit is another option, but you will definitely need to run up a cold air feed probably from the lower front bumper area.
Just drill out the box, remove the trumpet and pop in a good panel filter. I'm using a Jetex in ours.

I've got a 57i on mine and in the cold it certainly does roar...but do make a cold air feed as it gets very warm, especially in traffic and in the summer. An enclosed system like the CDA is great but expensive.
The power with a conventional induction kit is compromised as the roar sound is actually the air getting uneavenlt sucked in, if you want optimum performance the air should be smooth like in the Pipercross Vortex system.
Saying that...I'm gladly giving a few bhp away as the roar is sweeeeet

Where exactly is this trumpet? I've had a look in the airbox but can't see it!! Is it in the cold air feed?

trumpet looks like this....

nah on a serious note, its just a black spout/pipe that feed air into the enclosed air box, id leave it on if it were me, and just drill as many holes as you can with a 12mm drill bit on the wing side of the box, you get the original cold air from behind the headlight through the trumpet and youll get extra intake/noise through the holes youve just drilled.... tbh there isnt much difference in stock paper filters and k+n's etc when you do this... id have a dry non oiled panel filter or a stock one to avoid any fouling of the maf... but thats just me

You can remove the trumpet and still keep the cold air feed to the wing as i have done. I just removed the trumpet/cold air feed by gouging the four lugs that hold it into the air box with a screw driver. It all then comes out in one piece. I then cut the trumpet bit off leaving the lugs in place and the cold air piece just clicked back in place
I also drilled 24 10mm holes in the wing and front side of the box and fitted a greenair cotton filter and it now feels much more responsive. It has also lost a few nasty flat spots i had and seems to deliver the power much more seamlessly than it did before
TBH, it just feels quicker and torquier than it did before and im even getting torque steer when i accelerate which it never had before!!!!(the last time i had this was on an MG monty turbo ) Its a much cheaper mod to do than fitting an induction kit and gains better results IMHO. The 40 to 80 mph in 4th is now pretty shockingly quick!!! And its the same story throuout the rev range an any gear!!! I seriously need to get my car on a rolling road cos im sure its kicking out lots more than the standard sh!tty 115 bhp!!!!
