What are your top speeds in 1st, 2nd 3rd etc.
-
uh.. in 5th, 136 mph
dunno bout the rest
-
80-85 in 3rd - very handy when joining a busy motorway.
16v.
-
^ yup for sure.. i normally join goin faster than everything else.. lol
-
1st - 40mph
2nd - 70 mph
3rd - 100mph
vr6
i haven't gone a lot faster!
-
Errr.....
5th 140-145 on the clock (wasn't looking that closely!)
I must stress that this wasn't on a public road
-
^ what in? a vr6?
-
Yup!
I stress thaat it was 'on the clock' so with about 10% off would make it around 130mph actual!
Felt blimmin' quick though and still felt like it had more, but I ran out of road!
-
:)
btw.. where the 8v owners gone? they surprisingly quiet in here..

122 in 5th ;) 8v mk3
-
ok so...
from the perf table on the main site here..
8v - 124
16v - 134
vr6 - 138
confirms those figures are pretty accurate :)
someone mentioned before that they'd like rolling road print outs of stock golfs for comparison, think it'd be a really good idea for the other 'but mine pulls away quicker than yours' arguments
-
Yeah, would be a good idea to get some print outs posted! :)
-
123Mph on 5th 8v Mk3
-
123Mph on 5th 8v Mk3
You beat me by 1mph!! ;)
-
125mph indicated in 5th on a French Autoroute. Engine felt like it had some left aswell, but the car was pretty full and the steering started getting a bit light, so I settled down into a 110mph cruise.
8v of course.
-
Fast speedo ;)
-
Im just going by my manual... ;D
Cos of my new injectors etc and run in engine, im gonna say mine'll do 125Mph.
-
Fast speedo ;)
Who said it was indicated on the speedo? ;)
-
Was that 125 km/ph?
-
125km/h over the speed limit possibly :)
-
Was that 125 km/ph?
ur getting our cars confused again, urs breaks down @ 55mph.
... anywayz, i thought this was www.golfGTI.co.uk ... not www.golfvr6.co.uk
:D
-
yeah it is www.golfgti.co.uk but you want www.gaybar.co.uk
-
Is that a URL u retrieved from ya favourites list? :-*
-
if only you knew...................... ;D
122 (speedo) in an 8v mk2, but i dont wanna kill it so i have only done it once, felt real smooth tho
-
Whats this 80 - 85mph in 3rd for a 16V!
if i take mine up to 7,000rpm in 3rd i can hit 100 - 105mph (the later when using Optimax). My car is standard other than a Ramair Direct replacement filter and a Magnex Exhaust!
1st, around 30mph
2nd, i get around 65 - 70mph
3rd, 100 - 105mph
4th, have done about 120mph (usually change up around 110, so will probably go above 120)
5th, fastest i have been to date is 130mph but there was still loads to go!
rekon i could get 150 on the clocks on the right bit of road! (bit reluctant to try though as my car has done 132000mls so might kill the engine if i try!).

My 8v hits 30mph in first!
and u reckon u can hit 150Mph?? a V6 4Motion dont even do that! only the R32 does and it only hits about 154Mph and its got 236Bhp and a V6 engine!!
The 16v mk3 only does 134mph and that exhaust and filter u added prolly gave u about 5bhp extra... not enuff IMO to hit 150Mph
-
Still CONSIDERABLY QUICKER than the 8v :)
-
coule en poule
:-*
-
I never rev it hard in first so will go above 30mph (if you read what i said it says "around 30"!)
secondly 150mph on the clocks! that doesent mean i would be actually doing 150mph!
-
the mk3 16v feels like its limited to 136... (on the clock that is)
still feels like 'loads to go' but wont go beyond it..
-
secondly 150mph on the clocks! that doesent mean i would be actually doing 150mph!
yes i know, so basically... u mean u can do 134mph...
not 150mph on the clock... I can prolly do 150mph on the clock... tho it'll stop accellerating at 124mph or whatever
-
Overseer - u sure it wont go past 136 on the clocks? the fastest i have been in mine todate is 130, which i have done a few times now and it gets there so easily! not sure what rpm i was at but i think i was somewhere between 5000 and 6000.
Black gti - "yes i know, so basically... u mean u can do 134mph... not 150mph on the clock", read what i said "rekon i could get 150 on the clocks" at no point in my message do i mention 134 on the clock do I?
by the way if your car stoped accelerating at 124, the speedo aint gona keep turning to show 150 is it! it would show 124!
-

???
So ur cars max speed is 136mph but its speedo goes to 150Mph
yet my cars max speed is 124Mph and my speedo cant go further??
... i might be tired, but that dont make sence... why can yours keep going even tho ur car doesnt go past 134mph......
-
140 with 4 adults in and still had more! ran out of road and nerve!! :o There's no replacement for displacement!!! ;D
-

yup.. it does get there easy!
i even made a post "mk3 16v speed limited?"... its at around 5000/5500 revs.. maybe a lil higher.. definitely feels like a limiter rather than being maxed out. just kinda wont accelerate anymore, but holds its place. redline on a 16v is at 7000 so..?

he just means the speedo markings show 150.. the 8v speedo isnt much diff is it?

Yeah youre right, I took 1st to 4th to the red line today and it hits all of the above very comfortably. Not good to hit that red bit too often tho, thats why shes in such good nick on 116k and on Optimax full time....just cant bring myself to get a new car............yet!
Oh and I believe the speed is limited, its kind of just sits there at 130ish, probably a good thing too!!

123Mph on 5th 8v Mk3
You beat me by 1mph!! ;)
common m8s are youre engine standard? :-[,dosomething replace cat, lighted flywheel, induktion kit.its only 250 quid and you`re doing 130-135 easly :D.
bring it on ;D
-
Well I've made my speedo say 142. How fast I was actually going?.. who knows.. If I was to say it was ten percent inaccurate i'd say I was doing 156.2mph.. but I'd say its more like 134 in reality ;)
Mk3 16v
-
Got mine up to 134 on the clock not to long after i bought it, aint got near that since, paranoia sets in at around a ton... well on public roads anyway.
-
mine topped at 140 on the clock the other day... musta been goin uphill for that 136... lol
-
I think there was a pebble from the driveway under my acc. peddle come to think of it! ;)
-
:)

Blow it out your @ss
Before I got my license back (for the 4th time), I'd go out right now and see. Now I'm more a keep it at 70-75 (at all cost - fun during rush hour).
However my answer wouldn't be valid anyway, I've got an automatic (whimper). Couldn't help it, though, I didn't see passing up the car for $1500 just for that.
As for top speed, I remember playing tag with a Benz coming back from skiing in Vermont @ around 120mph for a few hours, 'til he got pulled over in Connecticut.
-
I thought the GTI's were faster. I've has 120mph out of my standard TDI.
-
This will upset some. I have a courtesey car at the mo while some paint is redone on my baby its a 1liter New Ford Fiesta and i had 110 on the clock tonight and it handels great. F@@k Me what am i sayin. :-X
-
Hmm,
8v cab
30 1st.
60 2nd.
85 3rd.
100 th.
125 5th.
-
Im same as Jo_Cabriolet
-
Ive topped out the 140mph dials with my golf and it was still accelerating. Got a bit hair raising when I could see things on the horizon one second and the next they were in the rear view.
Just realised this is mk3 section, but mines a mk2. soz
-
to add to the confusion... if big wheels are fitted increasing the rollilng radius this would probably compensate for the <10% over-reading built into speedos, right?
if the tachometer is accurate (why would it read over?) and you know the ratios would this not give the most accurate measurement of speed???
i do have slightly larger wheels than standard and on my TDI my tacho reads a fraction under 1000rpm per 30mph in top, when i checked the manual it all added up - quotes 29.6mph/1000rpm....
oh and I got 124 on the clock but mine has K&N and modified Injectors so is clearly not 90bhp any longer....
