Title: Painting Front Bumper
Post by: Golf8vGti on 15 November 2006, 00:22
Hi all

Just wondering if someone could either point me to a detailed guide or actually explain the process of spraying up a front bumper? Im only practicing and trying to teach myself basically and was hoping someone could help?

Its a mk2 big bumper in tornado red ive got aluminium oxide paper in 40, 60 and 80 grade and then wet and dry in 240, 400, 800 and 1200.

Can i use halfords primer? Im going to get the paint in a rattle can from VW so i get a good paint match.

Cheers all
J

you will need a certain type of paint to suit the plastic as it need the correct addhesive and flexablity.
Best bet is a auto paint shop.
Then paint, sand paint, sand etc till smooth

You can use a plastic primer, but if you want the textured bits to be smooth then a filler primer will be needed.

Hi mate just got some big bumpers and sprayed em to a nice finish (i used to spray for renault)
1.Mine were a bright Blue , as they were already painted I just flatted them with 800 paper (you will need a lower grade if there are deeper scratches).
2.Next cleaned them down (very important and make sure they are dry before painting)
3.Then applied 4 coats of tornado red , took a while to cover the blue (spray using even strokes , try to keep moving and dont spray over the same place twice on the same coat) btw always spray indoors if poss make sure its warm  .
4.Once you have a nice shiny finish time for the laquer (if you got runs etc allow paint to thoroughly dry before flatting thenrepeating spraying again). Apply 2-3 coats of laquer (again nice even strokes)
Enjoy! If you do use primer , always use plastic primer as its more flexible.
BTW The Halfords cans of spray are a great match (for me at least) , and you can always have your exact colour mixed there in spray cans
Hope this has been some help

Thats very helpful mate, sorry to sound stupid though but is that 800 wet and dry paper and did you use that wet?

Yes wet and dry 800 , first i used it dry on the bigger scratches to smooth them out . then all over wet to make the paint stick and smooth everywhere out  , i'll post pics when i can get my camera back , they turned out really nice , even if you get a few flat not so shiny bits , lacquer will bring the finish up nice if applied properly (ie nice full coat but not to much to run - may need practise).
Overall a steady hand , taking your time and a good eye are very important. Masking took me around 1.5 hours as i really wanted to get it right , Overspray = Nasty

aye ive done an entire wing with halfords paints , and also done colourcoded arches on my old 205 gti , its actually fairly easy , the trick is preparation , keeping the spray area dust free , no humidity , and warmth , i used bin bags on the floor (in garage) after sweeping and damping down dust , also a small space heater , (it was winter at the time) , i also found leaving the cans in the airing cuboard overnight helps as it warms the paint and gives a finer spray. also let the panels heat up if its a cold day (left mine in garage with space heater for half a day. make sure you mask off areas ya dont wanna spray with newspaper and 'good' quality masking tape. and as said above prepare surface well with wet and dry. paint doesnt stick well to glossy surfaces so needs flatting. if your unsure , practice on the old small bumpers or somin similar.

Right started the bumper today gave it a good clean to get all the crap off of it, then used 600 grade wet and dry as ther where some rather nasty scratches then whent over it with 800 grade.

Then used the 800 again but this time wet to get a nice surface, then spent god knows how long masking off areas that i didnt want sprayed took me about hour n half, be worth it in the end tho as i still wanted the little fins black.

Seeing as its so damn cold outside etc i used red primer and started that in my bedroom so not only am i high as a kite but all my floor space is taken up with a bumper.

Now can any kind ppl tell me if there is anything i nered to do to the bumper before i spray the the Tornado red on?

TOP TIP: Dont spray a bumper or any car panel for that matter in your bedroom you WILL end up high!!

u could use a fine wet n dry to smooth the primer somthing like grade 1200 or even 2000 which is what i used. im currently spraying my dash panel at this monent and i am waiting for it to dry before i add it's final coat.

Ok , once primered (with plastic primer ) leave to dry . then use 800 or even higher for better results (wet) to smooth primer , then spray , if you have already sprayed and its gone wrong , just allow to dry for a day at least then wet 800 again till smooth and paint again (you already have the primer on so go straight to painting)...
You have done most of the work now if you have primered and masked up , so its just a case of getting a nice finish , what i would say is to spray a couple of light base coats on and allow to dry then apply 2 nice even coats allowing to dry in between , hope this helps.

I have just sprayed an eyebrow spoiler and went wrong lol , but smoothing it down and repainting and bingo! a good finish was achieved...practise makes perfect

oh and i know what you mean , I spray in my living room and end up with red paint up my nose

i'm pretty certain you have to remover the gloss from the paint before you apply the lacquer

Nope you dont , why flat it down when you have a nice finish????
The lacquer will stick regardless as long as the painted area is clean and fresh , once i get my phone back i'll post pics of my bumpers/grille/eyebrow i did myself

actually hes right , you should rub down the paint if your going to laquer over it to give a good surface to bond to , if ya just spray over a gloss finish it might look alright now but will peel later on , most non metallic paints dont need laquer though.

Post by: sacvwgolf on 27 November 2006, 22:33
yeah but won't rubbing down before laquer ruin the paint finish?

no it wont , as i said if its a none metallic finish you dont need laquer , where as metallic finishes you do , if you do want to put laquer on the none metallic finish to make it harder wearing , after its dry wetflat it with some 1200-2000 paper then spray it with the laquer once youve cleaned the surface after flatting it. the laquer will give the surface the glossy look hence why it doesnt matter if you remove the shine on the paint underneath.

Lacquering will help protect paint and prevent fading as long as the paint is not completly dry is ok without flatting down paint , I never had a problem with cars coming back (and renault have long paintwork warrantys) , check my sig for results  , I also did lower grille same way , also eyebrow spoiler yet to fit

excuse my camera
