Title: MK5 aftermarket headunit and CAN-BUS cables?
Post by: golfdude on 13 November 2006, 21:19
Hi All,

Hopefully there is a simple answer to this post.

I have a MK5 Golf GT TDi. I don't rate the RCD500 system and want to fit my aftermarket Pioneer head unit. I have the facia adapter and aerial adapter so those bit's are sorted. However I bought the Autoleads ISO converter cable but when I remove the key from the ignition the stereo stays on (regardless of switched ignition cable in loom).

I've since found out that the existing stereo responds to signals in the electrical system which an aftermarket system cannot. It's called CAN-BUS.

To cut a long story short, I'm after a cable presumably with some intelligence behind it that can translate the signals from CAN-BUS to normal ISO that my Pioneer will recognise. I'm not keep to splice into existing cables from elsewhere in order to provide ignition switch signal power to the head unit.

Has anyone encounted the same and resolved.

This may or may not help.  I've had a kenwood unit fitted and am waiting for the CAN-BUS adaptor to be produced.  My supplier has told me in the next month or two and should give me my steering wheel control functionality back, but it isn't on the market yet for kenwoods - but is for other makes (not sure which).  There is a company called connects2 on the internet - maybe check them out

You need the Hunter CB8-R can-bus adaptor.

Link: http://www.huntertransducers.com/searchdetails.asp?ID=49

This item will give outputs for the following:

Speed Pulse
Side lights
Reverse lights
Handbrake
Engine RPM (car alarm)
Ignition on / off

All you need to do is connect to the Autoleads ISO converter cable (leaving your original loom intact  ) that you have for +, -, can bus high and can bus low.

OR mail me your loom and adaptor etc for the headunit etc and I will solder the wires to the correct places FOC

If your having problems or can't / dont know what I am talking about please PM me with a contact number and I will call you

Hi 'the doc'.

I'm confused. I've got the Autoleads cable, if I remember right the Canbus H and L cables relate to the yellow and red cables on the autoleads loom? If I swapped them around it made no difference - the head unit remained functional when the ignition was turned off.

Which wires are you saying need to be saldered to presumably simulate the ignition switching?

Thanks

They cost £100-125 approx - call them tomorrow for a firm price

I had to use one in my Caddy van when I fitted my Pioneer X1R into it

ahh, no worries mate.

Sounds the same as this one then: http://www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk/shop/Soundlinx-CAN01VW-VW-CAN-Bus-Interface_pageJJ7ZZproductJJ2386ZZcategoryJJ/ACCESSORIES/VOLKSWAGON/

Replaced the need for the Autoleads cable as it does it all in one.

cheers fella. I'll get one on order.

Beats me how such a cable can cost so much - seems like another way for manufacturers to suck more dosh from us consumers.

Nice selection of cars there by the way. Suprised you don't have a scooby there to. (i used to have one).

That must have been an import then - I don't recall them ever making a UK spec STi Wagon version. I had my WRX for 3 years. Lovely car but fancied a change after a bit.
