I'm told mechanical tappets in the engines is worn out and 8 of them will need to be replaced, ?14 pounds each. Cashflow problems at the moment. Is there any interim less expensive action I can take to resolve this problem? Noise can be very annoying for 6 minutes until engine warms up. 8valver it is.

Any advice much appreciated.
Many thanks.

You could try flushing the oil followed obviously by an oil and filter change.
The small oilways in the hydraulic tappets can get semi blocked which is why flushing the oil can sometimes help.
Have you got a genuine VAG oil filter fitted?

Cheers Rich. Oil filter not VAG product.
Oil was changed shortly before I bought the car. Nice car inside out but a few persistent problems with the engine. Unlucky I didn't find
this forum in time before the purchase.
???

If you haven't got a genuine VAG oil filter fitted then it may not have the NRV (non return valve) fitted. This is very important as it helps to keep the oil at the top of the engine for the next time you start up. Without it, the oil takes a lot longer to reach the head and hence tappety tap.

Noisey tappets are very common especially this time of year when its cold. As long as they quieten down when the engine warms up then i wouldn't worry to much.

My car is doing the same in this cold weather, once its up to temp shes sweet though! You could try an oil change and put in some heavier weight oil that might help you!
