^^^ seconded

g/f drives a Ford Kack,  :embarassed: but that's down to cost rather than anything else. What's your budget ? I'd agree with Dinx and look at a Lupo or maybe a decent spec Seat Ibiza, it depends what they want it for as it's pointless getting an Lupo GTI if they're just going to the shops in it.

^^Third

budget ideally as cheap as poss for the better/newest car. if i had to go il push it up to 3000-3200 for a new car but 2000 for an older one.

Spec: sure footed on motorway and preferable fuel effiecient. after a 1998/9 onwards really

for the mother was thinking vw bora 1.6 or tdi? but wondered how vw automatics hold up?
possibly audi a3 1.6?

lupos out the quesion, but thanks tho, bascially golf bora sized car passat size possibly if good on fuel.

^^^^^^ fourthed

The boras are just a booted golf so you know where youll be , no idea about autos but i think they are all hevier on fuel

Title: Re: A car for the wife or mother?
Post by: gibby on 10 November 2006, 11:03
I doubt you'll go wrong with any of the choices above, Bora TDI's are supposed to be quite good, you could get a decent spec 130 but I think you'll have to up your budget from 2k. The Passat is probably a bit too big but an A3 would be cool too but again a bit of a bigger budget than 2k would be needed. If it was me I'd go for a nice Bora TDI, 4 doors, boot, decent sized car. I'd go manual gearbox but that would be personal choice and I've no idea about the autos.

my gf drives a 106  :embarassed: but you can get a baby seat in the back with ease so i would have thought a polo sized vw would still be suitable for what you need.

you could pick up a nice mk4 golf or bora like you say for your price rangel so you should have a good choice of motors to go through...don't forget to check out the polo's aswell tho...

thanks for the comments. yeh i was thinking  bora tdi auto ideally, but there hard to find.
if you had to  choose which would you take?

a3 1.6
a4 tdi
golf 1.4/1.6/tdi mk4
bora 1.6/tdi
bmw e36
honda civic
saabs 9-3/9-5
and volvos pretty cheap nowadays

wha do u rekon?
Title: Re: A car for the wife or mother?
Post by: gibby on 10 November 2006, 12:39
I'd have an A4 tdi before a A3 1.6, plus you'll probably get a newer A4 with better spec for your money as they don't seem to hold their values as well as the A3s.
Of those Golfs I wouldn't get a smaller engine one so I'd deffo go for a TDI so either a Bora or a Golf TDI.
I don't really like BMW e36 and they will be quite pricey to maintain.
Honda Civics are probably really reliable etc as per Jap cars but I just wouldn't want one.
Saab's 9 series will be quite pricey to maintain and don't park one in Manchester because apparently the gangs over there always pinch Saab 900 series as their signatures !
For practicality then I guess a Volvo is as safe and as good as anything and they're certainly better looking than they used to be so I'd drive one.

So from my personal opinion and to stop waffling ! I'd look for a decent spec A4, a Bora or a Golf TDI or a decent spec Volvo from that list.

Just take what I say with a pinch of salt though as I own a mk1 convertible, a camper and a Golf Rallye and the most practical out of them is the mk1 !

As Above. Bora Tdi or Passat tdi is really good value, if she can handle the size!

Post by: DubFan on 10 November 2006, 13:36
are you talking about a car for a wife or a mother? not nessesarily your mother?

anyway, my suggestion, Mk4 Polo. Any engine size from 1.4 up is nippy, but plenty of poke on the motorway, the 4 door is very practical, can still get 4 adults in or a couple of baby seats, or even a push bike with the back seats down. Get power steering cos otherwise it'll be heavy for parking.
I had one in Dragon green, twas a great little car, thoroughly recommended.

You'd easily find a Polo for that budget too.

Hey Dinx, when we were in Leicester I took Han for a spin in my cab with the roof down as it was quite a nice sunny day for this time of year and then I remembered why I love(d?) it so much. Not sure I want to sell it now, so I'll just have to see how my finances go.
Title: Re: A car for the wife or mother?
Post by: GuvGTI on 10 November 2006, 13:41
its true, i need more car for the money, bigger cars go for less money on the used car trade cos less in demand whereas polos and a3 go for more money than golfs or a4s and passats!

Getting one cos mum keeps complaining about the car she has at the mo, its a renault ( which i dint  buy mind) and now cos ive bought a few cars and a few for my friends, she trusts me buying one!

normally she doesnt mention anything bout cars but said sell the renault and find me a car! so thats what im gonna do. Have to see how it goes, not ina major rush but just like to see the market.

oh guv..get your missus or ma a cab! they'll love you long time..obv in dif ways or else that would be very wrong!

I'm surprised no-ones suggested the Skoda fabia yet. Better than a polo.

My missus has got a Yaris T Sport which is a great little car. 0-60 in 8.7 , 55mpg on a 70mph cruise and group 7 insurance.

Wife drives a Mk2 GTI 8v, mother a Irmscher kitted Vaux Meriva and a Vectra V6.
As for your wife/mother... something like a mk3 VR6 or a mk5 R32, so you can have some fun without the servicing bills!
