Title: iPOD Connection
Post by: illyun on 09 November 2006, 23:12
Does the iPOD option on the GTI allow for connection only to the iPOD Nano, the iPOD Video thingy or both?  I have one of the newly released iPOD video mp4 players with 80GB storage... will this connect to the iPOD connection or will I have to go out a buy an iPOD Nano?

I tried the dealer's car with my old fashioned 40gb Ipod and it works fine. I believe from other posts that the Ipod link comes with a fitting kit to all accept different sized ipods. Can't confirm yours will def fit though....

As far as i know, there are 2 types of Ipod connector.

The basic glovebox one that provides connectivity, but you still controll it therough the Ipods controls.

And the ipod kit that will charge the pod, and you can also (to some extent) controll it through the stereo controls. I have researched ans I have not been able to find a way off getting track info displayed on ANY standard VW head unit. BOO!!!

I think the armrest one should be controlled and displayed on / by the head unit

Hey guys

Recently chatted to my dealer about the Ipod connection. We been having difficulty with sound quailty and playback from our Ipod NANO and he reckeons the reason for this is because its the wrong Ipod

We pointed out that we were told to buy that Ipod and he said that the dock (inside the the armrest) was not compatible and we should rather upgrade to teh Video woch now comes standard with teh system when you buy the car

He also mentioned that the system comes with a bunch of plastics fittings that you plug into the dock for the differant Ipods. So I reckon you should speak to your dealer and maybe see if you can test differant Ipods before getting it.

Wouldnt suggest playing it through teh NANO cos ours sounds crap. But there might be something wrong with teh car though so dont take my word for it.

Cheers all

Hi, thanks for that.  I've got one of those Video iPOD's - not a Nano... so hopefully it should work.  If not, then I could always get the right one and sell my video one.  I think that the USB option might have been a better one if it means that anything with a USB connection could be used on it...  :undecided:

Hey again.

Was thinking the same thing. Just get a cheap flash drive or something. Have you tried using the Itrip on your Ipod yet???
That might be a better option than selling it. Also rather cheap.

Let me know
Cheers

I originally speced the USB connection - ordered my car last Friday
- see http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=50021.0

But on questioning salesman and the post just referred to, have changed the spec to an IPOD connection - seems a lot more popular.
It seems that only flash type USB devices (no moving parts) can be plugged straight in and any other USB device (hard drive types) "may not" work and if they did, may jump.
But haven't got any definitive answers.

I don't have either sort of device at the moment so will wait till car arrives and do some more finding out nearer the time.

Read yesterday that new model Audi's will have an iPod link which shows the track/artist/album displayed in the head unit.

Audi is the more prestigious marque within the VAG group (Bugatti/Lamborghini/Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda) and no doubt, as the poorer relations, we will hopefully see this technology at some time in the future.

Has anyone had an Ipod connection (glovebox) retrofitted and if so how much did it cost?  Wish I'd speced this from new......

I had the iPod adapter installed by the dealer back in May (before factory fitting was an option) and paid about £100 for the device (there are a couple on sale on eBay for £90 (£85 + £5 P&P)).  It says it should only take about 1/2 hour to fit, so it depends on the hourly rate.

think mine was £150 at the dealer. Its fine but not exactly handy. You can basically play your first five playlists and then all the tracks on your ipod but the HU gives you no information. I used to have an Alpine system in my last car which was just like navigating the ipod. So much better and no doubt what the audi has!

Hello, I bought a cable and fitted it myself using Docs instructions for fitting a phone kit. The cable was a Dension Ice Link which I bought off Ebay for £90. It was straight forward to do and took me about an hour. You can thread the cable to your glove box or I read where someone had managed to reach the armrest but I used the cubby by the drivers right knee.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the further info guys.  Definitely need to get an ipod connection sorted out as so much of my music is now in mp3 format only.

Speaking of mp3s, bad news about the excellent Russian download site allofmp3.com being screwed by Visa and Mastercard blacklisting them (after Visa and Mastercard were threatened with legal action in the US by the record companies).  Difficult to get money into your account now, although I believe that there may still be some indirect ways of doing it that I'll need to check out further.

In fact, just heard from a workmate that allofmp3 has 'suspended services' for the time being!
