can anyone help? i got a mk2 gti 16v 1989, when i turn my lights on there fine but when i put my spotlights on, the passenger side goes off but the side light stays on and if i only use the flasher it stays on but the spotlight doesn't come on

sounds to me like there is a wiring fault somewhere. I know your thinking "No Sh1t" . Try looking around the headlamp wiring and see if any wires have rubbed together and worn the casing causing them to touch. does sound funny though.

8916vGTI. i've looked and cant see anything. dont you think the fuse would have gone if that would have happened?
-
could be an earthing problem
-
or a light stalk/switch problem (poor connections)
-
now thinking about it, i did wired the spotlights back up with terminal plugs along time ago when i had a little bump and lost the clip. they may have touched, if this is the case what has happened ?
-
a little bump ? on the front end ? thats a bugger mate still sounds like somthings shorting disconnect the spots and see what happens.
-
or a bulb may have gone in one of the spot lights hence not making the circuit correct .
-
Look at the fuse again, if its one of the Mk2 originals then it could be the problem. i have just replaced 2 in my fuse box and they were brittle.
-
its not the bulb, not the fuse or the headlight wouldn't work but why dose it go out when the spot comes on. it picked my head all day. if the two wires have crossed where would it have fused and why is the tree wires on the back of the headlight?
-
does the lights work WITHOUT the spot lights connected?
-
the first click i get sidelights, second click i get headlights and when i flash [pull the indicator stork towards me before it clicks] all lights work apart from the passenger side spot but when i put main beam on [all the way back till it clicks] the passenger side headlight goes out
-
just try disconnecting the spots and see what happens.
-
im sure thats an earth problem as i had that with mine, disconect it all and clean it up the try, worked for me, good luck

i've done that jedi16v still the same. dubslug i'll have a go in the morning. but dose anyone know why there are three wires on the back of the headlight.
cheers lads.
