Post by: black_vr6 on 15 April 2003, 01:38
my vr6 is  a pretty fast car but i was wondering about the benefits of getting it chipped. Is it worth while doing this or am i not going to notice much difference.any comments would be much appreciated.  8)

well for an idea of pre and post chipping power figures you can check out the AmD site www.auto-amd.co.uk/ they have a power graph..

I dont actually know anyone with a mk3 vr6 thats chipped so as far as drivability etc im not the guy to ask, although have you considered a VSR inlet manifold? or a Z Engineering supercharger? (if you are feeling flush :D)  Im looking to eventually get a mk3 vr6 myself and trying to research into what will aid performance without sacrificing MPG too much (although a 2.8 lump at full chat will prob drink the juice)

People sometimes swap the lump for the larger 2.9 unit and tune that about, but again it all boils down to budget....

Let us know what you think

Cheers

I wouldn't bother with getting it re-chipped, I had it done by AMD (v helpful people) it was virtually un-noticeable! if you want it to go faster i suggest you look into supercharging or get a turbo for it.. :o
try the following links:
http://www.stealthracing.co.uk/
http://www.nsracing.com/

start saving your pennies now, and if you havn't had it chipped yet thats 250 quid saved towards a turbo.

which supercharger did you go for dude.  I was quoted 2000+ for a stage one charger from Nik saran racing. Think the supercharger was made by Z-Engineering. Im interested in this mod but my mechanic who looks after the car keeps warning me about melt down in the pistons.  To be Honest I know very little about it. My mechanic says "its just a matter of time until theres a big BANG".

the z engineering supercharger only pushes out just over 6 pounds boost, so melting pistons is a possibility, though very unlikely.
check out the z engineering website, i hope they wouldnt dare to sell a "bolt on kit" that really required you to change the pistons for forged ones.

you might be more prone to blowing a head gasket, or even worse you might not pass the mot test because of emissions.

If the Mk3 Vr6 has 174 bhp as stardard> Then you add 80 hp with the supercharger> Thats 254 bhp thats alot of Horses....Does the charger run all the time? ?Do you think it worth the money. Has the torque improved and overal performance  Ive heard it very noisy.... INTERESTED

Also you might want to think about brakes and suspension upgrades at the same time, or even before hand.

Don't forget thats alot of engine to swing the nose of the car about.

PS is the engine bolted to the car or the car to the engine? think about weight distribution.

the supercharger does run all the time because it is driven by the belt that drives your alternator, no its not noisy, no more so than normal and yes the power is awesome, is it worth the money? i think so.
and to reply to Fat White VR6's valid points, the brakes on the vr6 are good as standard, if you aren't altering the vehicle weight or braking later into tight bends why upgrade the brakes? it is reccomended that the front engine mount is changed to a vibra-tech mount cos the standard one is a bit soft, as for suspension, i would say that is a matter of personal choice, i dont try to drive my car any faster around bends because its supercharged, if you put your vr6 round a corner at 60mph so will i, then i will nail you out of the corner.
if you see what i mean :)

Title: 850-r!!
Post by: quickvr6 on 19 May 2003, 01:01
sorry lads snd lasses ive got avolvo 850-r with a boost cont running 12psi and i ran neck a neck with geoffs car, i would recommend the supercharger without a doubt my next step is an engine rebuild + rechip which means lots of money, in the long run vr6 drivers stick with supercharging!
if you want to speek 2 woody about our cars, visit him at woody_gp800@hotmail.com (i dont want a fight, but i like fast cars and jetskis) awsome!!!! (my jetski is faster than all your cars put together ha ha ha, 400 bhp per tonne) yamaha gp 800 r. 0-60 faster than a fireblade if that makes sense. any doubts contact my address as stated above.

i gave my user name and password 2 my mate and he posted the above message! if you doubt how fast a volvo is, race one at your own risk!!!!
i did, and found out that his car is an animal. without the supercharger, cos of his boost controller i wouldnt have stood a chance, got my car sideways, much to his amusement, (tosser) he has now converted his volvo back to standard, fearing he might blow his cylinder head, ha ha ha.

woody is 30 years old, and he would race anyone in his volvo. make no mistake, it might be a volvo estate but he still has 250 bhp at the wheels and his car is probably lighter than a vr6. if you think thats got some power take a look at the audi a6 estate, 340 hp and 186 mph you will lose!!!!!!!!!!! i love my golf but certain estate cars will rip the piss out of you, even if the driver is wearing a cardigan and has no street cred.
your choice but i avoid them coz i lose.
bring on pulsar gtir's and the such like coz thier fancy hair and gucci clothes dont make their cars any faster, if you see what i mean,

Sorry dude Maybe Ive got your mate all wrong but volvo estates, Jet ski s and the fastest road racer (fire blade) shouldnt be in the same sentance it just seems wrong some how (chalk and cheese) so to speak.
Anyway have you any 0-60 times with the supercharger or has it just got loaded top end..I also WANT for more power..... stuff the street cred.. It would be nice to have both but on my salary its just not possible. For example Stuff Vr6 bring on 911 Sorry Ive Just left earth......Estate cars eh.........mmmmm interesting well would you believe it. Well as most estate cars that ive screamed past were over loaded with Maths books and boxes of files etc....Ill tell you what, May be there dub tuning experts sort of under cover like; some mad euro thing thats not quite caught on yet.Im not quite sure what suspension set up there all using but it seems very low.

Have you looked at prices for chargers?

Another really good mod, more for acceleration and handling rather than speed is a limited slip diff... works out about ?1000 ish all in. (BedRockVW in Scotland).

You're right about cam's making it rougher at idle, but they are a way of going quicker and that was what you said you wanted.

You could go out and buy a Schrick inlet manifold... as far as I'm aware they give around about 5% extra bhp (that'll be 10hp then) but much more importantly they give some more low down torque. They are hugely expensive though... but something to think about.

Turbo... "ch-ching" says the credit card! Dubsport near Manchester will fit one for around about ?3500... that'll give you around 250bhp... slap an extra ?1000 on top of that and you'll have approx 320bhp (that's on a standard engine!).

Superchargers... still expensive, but suposedly a little less likely to cause your engine to blow up. The best is the Vortech (they've stopped selling z-engineering units... think that's all that really needs to be said!) stage1 should be around 240... stage 3 about 310. MidlandVW in Cannock will sort you out with a fitted stage1 charger for ?2600 (?300 cheaper than Stealth).

So there you go... the options I'd look at if I was doing my VR over again. There are obviously other things you can look at but those are the ones I know about you could also take a look at the engine section of the club GTi uk forum...

Good luck, take care (don't get a beemer - mate!) ;-)

thanks go to you greg cos after having the super charger fitted and realising how much fun it is annoying audi tt's, scoobys, the list is endless, ha ha ha. ive been saving up for a turbo conversion and never gave dubsport a thought, i will now though. i e-mailed stealth for a quote but they didn't answer so i guess they lost a sale there.
thanks for the idea.
one thing im sure you will agree on is that forced induction on a vr6 is ace, i haven't stopped smiling in the 14 months that its been fitted.

oh ps, i thought the schrick manifold is far to expensive in terms of bhp per quid. so i cut my losses and went for the supercharger.
