Title: Help needed. Import again
Post by: RRY on 05 November 2006, 16:54
Got import GTi on 06 plate 5k miles.  Unfotunately buying a house is bit more important at age of 30 !!! and got  fair bit of money tied up in the car.  After many sleepless nights the car may have to go    .

Problem is.  Don't really want to mess around with private sale.  Have a cherished transfer and don't trust people on test drives!!!  Been to VW stealer and they won't touch car cause it is an import.  Any advice people or places that may want to but the car etc

What's the specification, and where are you situated.  I may know someone who could be interested.

As for garages etc, why not try the likes of Motorpoint?  They trade new and second hand cars and they sell imports.

got it from motorpoint.  reflex silver uk spec.  To be honest that is the other problem, aint got a clue what it's worth.  All prices are for uk bought ones.  Obviously have to declare it's an import and then nobody seems to know what price to qoute me!!!!

May just buy a caravan and keep the golf, got to be easier

What did you pay and how much do you want for it.  I may have a buyer for you?

We need the FULL SPEC of the car to give you an idea of price!

At my dealership, we don't shy away from buying imports as long as they are 100% UK spec.  I've seen a few imports with no climate etc which would render it a no-no for me.

I've bought a few and generally we value them around £2000 behind UK value.

Hope this helps ya

Yeah no your problem someone could do with setting up a compony selling cars on behalf of other people. Does the spec of you car make any difference to the value of your car? Because trading it in the dealers won't take spec into count and don't want to sell privately.

www.burchamcarsourcing.com will buy your car off you, and get you a new one without any hassle. It is where I got mine and sold my S2000.

Thanks for that. It's a good idea, did it work as well as it sounds? Did you get a good price for the S2000 and the GTI? How do you pay them? Did you get any image rights? Sorry for the questions.

No worries bullyboy.

Ross, who runs it is a great guy and I think gave a fair price. My S2000 had been keyed on three panels a week before and had bad scratches on all four wheels. The price was definitely better than I would have got at a dealer but not as good as I may have got privately. However the time saved and the fact the car was not perfect convinced me otherwise.

Pricewise the GTI was good as well. I think the key is to do your own research into what is available and how much (GTI prices don't seem to reflect what Parkers says at all due to the rarity of them) they are and then use that as a guide with the ones suggested to you. Ross won't buy anything without your say so and does all the checks, pick up, valeting and delivery.

I paid by bank transfer but I guess you could use bankers draft as well.

Not sure what you mean by image rights? If you mean for using my photo on his site, it was voluntary but I was happy to endorse it.

It really does cut out the hassle factor which when buying a car that is fairly hard to find could be significant. I would not hesitate to use them again. Anyhow, hope that helps, let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks for answering my questions looks like a good idea. The dealers just take the pi55. Would be nice to deal with some one who wants you custom again. Is morego still on the cards?

Hopefully, just need the cash.

Currently releasing some equity to do some building work so could always pop an extra 1k on that - sure the bank would be delighted to know I was planning on paying off a 50bhp increase over 23 years!!

spec of mine reflex silver 3dr GOlf GTi on 06 plate registered 18/05/06.  Approaching 6k miles (actually looked properly).  Climate.  Highline computer.  Alloys etc.  From motorpoint, they got it from Holland.  Uk spec.  Standard radio/cd player ready to be put back in.  Come people, what's is worth??

I've been impressed with the power grip to it's worth thinking about.

I would expect a VW dealer to offer you around 14-15 grand assuming that there are no options on your car.  I'm guessing that you paid about 18k for it from motorpoint? It would have to be 100% UK spec (i've seen some without rear foglights!!!). Once you get past the normal anti-import conversation, it should end up mid teens in my opinion.

PM me if you're struggling to find a home for it.

Thanks for that Mr VWmd.  Must be honest bit of a reality check with the value.  Thought it may have been worth a bit more   Suppose it is the danger of imports!!!

I think that is a pretty good price from a main dealer - well £15k is anyway.  I bought my 06 GTI for £21.5k and sold it after 15k miles and 6 months for £17k via ebay - could have got a bit more for it but just wanted to shift it without the major hassle of tryhing to get that extra £1k out of the deal.  I rang up VW Newport who kept asking if it was an import even though I kept replying I had bought it from a UK main dealer!  Then he asked if it had dual zone climate control as it wasn't standard anymore... what a complete tw@t... finally he said he'd call me back with a price but said that they would be looking to sell it for £18500 so I reckon would have offered me around £17k but never called back... thats dealing with a VW main dealer for you.  If you want to part-ex, then they are a lot more keen to listen.  I only deal with Wolsey in Ipswich when buying a new car because although they never gave me a discount - and one of the salemen quite rudely refused to answer when I asked why I shouldn't buy an import - they haven't given me any problems which is a bonus I suppose.  Their maintanence dept are clueless though and couldn't even diagnose a distributor fault on a Mk2 I took in - replaced a relay and then didn't know what to do when the problem didn't go

Its a shocking state of affairs really as main dealers should know everything about the products they are selling but there you go....

I'm surprised you have so much faith in Wolsey Ipswich!  I had a very poor experience with them, with them blatantly pushing GTI imports but refusing to confirm the differences in spec.

The worst part though, was a complete muppet of a salesman, who blatantly thrashed customers and stock cars (GTIs and R32s) engines, including turbos, whilst stone cold - absolutely shocking - if I were the dealer principal, I would have given him his P45 on the spot!

PM me if you want any more info.
