Title: Mk3 GTI 16V - spark plug oil leak?
Post by: squire1977 on 05 November 2006, 16:41
Hello all,
(1994 (M plate) GOLF Mk3 GTI 16V)

Found something a bit worrying in the engine today.  Just doing a quick top up on liquids/lubricants etc and found upon removal of the first spark plug lead (from the plug end)that oil had been getting in there.  I found it because I gave up trying to put the oil cap back on the head with the spark plug lead in the way so i decided to pull it out  - "SQUELCH" with oil flicking out off the lead!  The firm part of the lead that goes into the hole was covered in oil.  Shone a torch into the hole and saw oil surrounding the spark plug.  Didnt remove the spark plug  to stop oil getting into the cylinder.  I managed to soak most of it up and clean it with a wire and tissue prodding down into the hole.  Plugged the lead back on and it runs fine....so far anyway!

Any idea what could be wrong? I was careful topping up the oil and i didnt spill any on the spark plug.  Hoping its not a cracked head.  Perhaps the gasket has gone?  Im considering getting rid of the car now as i dont want to spend lots of money on it! Its done 130K now and still pulls well.  Not smokey and doesnt drink oil either.

Hope you can suggest what could be the problem?

Cheers
Stephen

Yeah, it will be the cam cover gasket almost certainly.
