usual car checks really bud clutch h/gasket blue smoke etc make sure u see car start from cold, idle stablisation valve can pack up causing poor or no idleing, gearboxes only real weakspot on the 16v check for crunching (second gear synchro will prob crunch slightly anyhow moreso when cold) whining noises and that you can select all the gears inc reverse, timing chain rattle on top right hand side of rocker cover these can be noisy on high milers check underneath car for corrosion/crash damage and rear wheel arches behind the bodyit,as newest mk2`s gettin on for 12yr old..good luck

apart from the general car checking the ISV aint a big problem, im running mine without it, and have been for about 8mths! u can easily run it off the idle screw. its handy to have but not a nessecity
make sure the clocks all work, and the mfa works on all functions.
on cold startup it'll probably sounds rough as hell, 16v's are notoriously rattly anyhow at idle, plus the injectors make ch ch ch ch noise when cold.
let it heat up or take it for a gentle run and it should quieten down
engine wise nothing drastic ever goes worng with them if they are well looked after, the odd sensor fails here & there but thats about the height of it.
you could do an HPI check on it also, even though its your mate its still worth a check.

yes cheers boys no need for the check as he had it done when he bought the car.
