Title: HELP - Car wont start
Post by: c8lnj on 01 November 2006, 17:27
The problem: Car turns over but no start.

car - mk2 golf 8v

Background info:

So far ive replaced the plugs, HT leads inc the one to the coil, Dissy cap & rotor arm & spanked in a new battery with no joy.

There is no spark from plugs to cylinder 3 & 4 and my rev counter doesnt work.

Fuel pump primes for a few seconds when ingnition is turned into position 2 then stops - as it should.

I think my next port of call is the coil???

Any help greatly appreciated.

Does the pump prime for a few seconds, or run continuously?

Got spark and/or fuel?

Got spark and/or fuel?

Pump primes for 3 or 4 seconds, 1/4 tank of BP Super & No spark to Cyl 3 & 4.

ok I'd look into the ignition switch next, try turning it 1 click, then running 12v to the starter trigger terminal (one with a black/red wire.
If it runs, the start position is screwed :)

Hi, thanks for your reply.

What makes you think my problem could be the ignition switch??

How do I test it?? Sorry to sound dim but im not a tech head & cant really follow your instructions.

the ignition switch can sometimes fail and prevent a spark when you're turning the engine over :)
If you switch the ignition on, then run a wire from the battery +ve to the terminal on the starter motor with a black/red wire, then engine shoud turn over.  If it then starts then the cause of the fault is likely to be the ignition switch :)

Seems strange how you get a spark on cylinder 1&2 but not 3&4. Do these cars have a hall sender? Could this affect things? If John's suggestion doesent give results id look at the coil next.

I read that to mean no spart at all!  If it only sparks on 1 & 2 I'd suspect the hall sender or dizzy if the dizzy cap & rotor arm have already been changed...
Turn the engine over with the dizzy cap off, does the rotor arm wobble about?

thanks for the replies...im 'borrowing' a coil from a mate tomorrow & getting a miltimeter tonight to check the current one.

rubjonny - can I just whip the cap off & turn it over or do I disconnect HT leads 1st??

just whip the cap off, only need to turn it over briefly to verify its spinning true.

Ok rotors spinning as it should.

I have to make clear I only bought this car a week ago as a non runner....he told me there was no spark from 3 & 4....I checked today & I do have spark to all cylinders.

Today ive removed the coil, tested it on multimeter....tested ok, replaced it anyway & still no fire up!!

Fuses & relays are all fine (I think) Ignition module showing 12v.

Im begining to think its not an ignition fault after all!!

How do I check the fuels getting through??

Im lucky my mate has a 8v digifant lying up his drive abandoned & is letting me take anything I want from it, I nicked his coil today....is there any other bits I could take to swap/test??

Could the MAF be responsible?? Its running a K&N induction kit just now!!

Sorry for all the questions, hope theres someone out there who can help me

Have you checked the timing? Swap the blue temp sensor, and the MAF is worth a try though they rarely fail completly

How do I check timing??? Excuse my lack of knowledge

Blue temp sensor was done about a year ago...says prev. owner, suppose theres no harm in getting another though...halfords sell these dont they.

Maf...yeah i'll whip the one off my mates to try!!

Previous owner told me the car started to run bad about 2 months ago like hesitating & not pulling like it should sometimes, when you planted the right foot. Then get worse & worse to the point he stopped driving it. When I went to take a look at it at his house he got it to fire after 10s or so & reversed it out the garage.....it smelled like it was running very rich. Now its not firing up at all!!

Dont bother with pattern sensors, buy genuine vw. will only cost £13!
025 906 041 A :)

As for timing:
1. Turn the engine over clockwise with a spanner/socket on the cam sprocket bolt till the notch on the crank pulley lines up with the mark on the belt cover
2. Check the punch mark on the rear of the cam sproket lines up with the top surface of the head, i.e. as if the rocker cover & seal were removed.
3. Remove the dizzy cap, and check the rotor arm lines up with spark plug lead #1

I'd do the blue sensor first, as it does sound like it has failed!

ok i'll get a new sensor from VW (hopefully they will have one in stock!! :/ )

I'll give the timing a check in the morning...too dark now.

Cheers

Oh forgot to mention, when the crank pully marks are lined up, its worth pulling spark plug #1 and shining a torch down the bore to verify cylinder 1 is actually at TDC :)
If you have a timing light you can check the ignition timing once you get it running, you need to remove the big green bung in the top of the gearbox.

In fact, have a read thru my digifant tuning guide in the maintenance+info section, it tells you everything you need to know

Ok i'll check this when I have light.....thanks for your help, I think i'll own you a virtual pint if we get this going

Im off to maintenance+info section now

Update:

Tested the injector continuity & found it to be 4.8 ohms...another wee thing checked off!!

Also found out the blue temp sensor was last replaced 10 months ago. Upon inspection the wires coming from the plug have gone brittle & some of the insulation has come off exposing the bare wire........this maybe causing an open circuit?? I'll look into it!

just to add, its possible for them to check ok and still not work right.  That said, bare wires are bad, mmkay?

Ok ive replaced the blue sensor for one thats known to work, replaced the maf, replaced the ECU & ignition module & checked the timing - which all lines up!!

Ive got fuel pissing out on ignition so that ends fine.

Plugs are sparking.

Bloody car

Anyone got any other suggestions??

You might just have to take it to a garage. Where do you live?

Not wishing to be funny but given the sh*t you're having have u got a mate who's got some sorta breakdown cover ???

Get them to help u push the car on to the road and get the liks of the AA to come out ;)

Always worth a shot .... and might save you some time, money and stress !!

Okay ive got her started

Basically by removing all the earth straps & coil, Dizzy, everything out & major clean up then put back in & she kind of stumbled into life:grin:

However very lumpy & overfueling to the max!! I can chug down to the bottom of my drive then it cuts out!!

Im thinking a bad earth has caused my ecu to overfuel & passed fuel into oil via the piston rings (dipstick smells of petrol....). Im going to get oil change & timing looked at next but hopefully light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks for everyones thoughts so far, comments welcome.
