i looks really nice in the sunshine and it also suites the car very well and makes it look quite classy imo
-
popular because its generic
-
because there was a limited number made in oak green...so rarer, hence more sort after..i think..
i dont get it tbh..but im a blue-colour girl..
Dinx
-
Coz it's lush
Actually I think toofunky hit the nail on the head, it makes the mk2 look classy and subtle.
-
Lots of people have a love for "British Racing Green" type colours, it's iconic I guess and there are rarer colours out there.
-
Tosh! Oak Green is nothing like British Racing Green!!!!
And why try and make the comparison with a German car???
Hate green myself!
(But like tobz's car!)

At no point did I say that oak green was BRG ! But you can't tell me that they're a million miles apart. What have you been taking Len ? British Racing Green can be a colour on any car can't it, be it German, Jap, Maltese, it's a description of a colour. I made no comparison to german or british cars. Apple white does not mean that apples are white does it !
You bored and trying to be controversial !
-
okaaaay...............so has anyone got a piccie that'll show up on a too-dark pooter screen?
-
if you look in tobz's sig..thats an oak green..^^
so true gib..or he needs sum new bins..
Dinx

I was looking on the main site for some Newark meet pics of Tobz but I can't find them.

hee hee I reckon those girls in the strip club on Saturday night have impaired his vision !

Here's one I've got that shows the colour pretty well:

It's a real difficult colour to get a good shot of though. You really gotta take a pic in early morning or late on a summers evening for the colour to come to life otherwise it just looks black.
-
fifteen f**king pound indeed. :lipsrsealed:
Anyhow, Oak green, was a rare option on the mk2's, it was an understated colour, and indeed made the golfs look cool and classy, it does have a slight reference to racing green (they share some of the same paint colours), but nothing more.
They are more popular now as finding one in good condition is becoming hard. As with anything the harder it is to come by a car then the higher the price will climb. So there you have it.
-
OK let me rephrase what I said then. Oak green is cool, just because it is ! Just look at Tobz's pic, quality !
Streeeeeeeeeewth !

Me controversial?
Now who's splitting hairs?
You had Oak Green and British Racing Green in the same sentence! No matter if you tried to hash it with the word type!
True British Racing Green is a very defined colour first used by Bentley.
You made the analolgy that does not compute!
-
I refer my honourable gentleman to my previous post !
....and Apple white was probably a defined colour of Dulux but does anyone really give a sh1t Mr. Logic !
-
aaaah!...tis a nice colour! we used to have a RR that colour...well similar. my golf's just micro-scratched black.

Well just for once Gibby mate I cant agree with ya!
To me remembering all those glorious British cars thundering around the tracks thrashing all those johnny foreiners!
Now where did I put my monocle?

A roller blimey!!!
Welcome to the forum by the way, got any pics of that golf of yours???
P.S. Don't let the 'friendly' banter put you off, just a typical afternoon in these parts
-
Yea take no notice of me and Gibby, we love each other really!
Pics of the Roller too if ya got any!
-
a roller?!?! good GRIEF nooo!!! never thought of that. just too lazy to type range rover in full. I think a green roller would look horrid. Actually i did nearly buy a hearse version 40yrs ago for £25. Black with brass knobs on, and conversion possibilities for the back end. It prob had a flywheel too. But practicalities kicked in and I sensibly stuck with my Mobylette....much better for a student in London in the 60s!
As for the Golf, pics are beyond me, but imagine an absolutely plain black mk2 with a factory sunroof, 5drs, factory steel wheels with round holes, nothing fancy, no exterior embelishments, just a discrete 'syncro' on the back.
-
If an old git like me can master posting photos I'm sure you can as well.
There's a thread above in this section that explains how to do it!
-
but it doesn't look any different to any other black golf!
-
Well we was thinking more of you and the car!
-
Red rocks in a mk2 when its red & not pink - dont buy a red car if, like me, you have no patience and cant be arsed cleaning/waxing every week - ill never buy another red car EVER
as for best colours....i prefer the royal blue in a mk2
bohenie, is it a syncro or just badged as one. if a proper then its rare model!!
-
Oh, it's a pukka basic syncro with bulge in boot that sticks it's claws into frosty bends! We even have the original brochure. Only internal changes have been a dodgy waxstat replaced by a Weber carb and man-choke, and a new JVC radio/cd and speakers. oh, and the rear wheel arches have been replaced.
-
Hey Len looks like you may have competition here for oldest forum user
-
myns a bmw green looks okay in the sun
-
yikes! i can see why you want a re-spray! no offence! :P

i said that about red after my first one then for some reason bought another two! doh!

Hey Len looks like you may have competition here for oldest forum user
I'm not the oldest registered member anyway!
There was a guy a while back aged 63 and as I'm only coming up for 54 then I'm still young!
But I'd have to agree that this lovely lady from the clues so far could well be older than me!
-
^^ the guy that bought a mark 3 16v for his son and he didnt want it, then he changed his mind?
-
Yep thats the one Neaty. He kept the Golf for a while coz his son didnt like it. But then his missus made him sell it coz it was too powerful for her!
-
Oak Green used to be my favourite colour until I discovered Bright Blue Metallic.....
-
Yeah that blue's fantastic  I think it's kinda funny to have ronal turbos on a supercharged car too  I'm sure technically all superchargers are turbochargers by definition (or else it's the other way round), car looks good either way!
-

and then had to get an Almera as a result which he hated :nerd:
-
Yep! i would have stuck with the Golf and made her drive it! Always tame the right foot!
Back on subject for a min.
To me its more the car than the colour anyway. For example I prefer tobz's car to Lewys!
(Both Oak Green)
-
dazzla's puke green is a pooter-joke, right? altho green tail-lights would be novel!
(i am indeed aged between 53 and 63...and that's all i'm saying)
-
My guess would be 58, but wouldnt press a lady for an answer!
Hmmm yea green tailights! I wont say anymore eh Billy!!!

Anyhow, Oak green, was a rare option on the mk2's, it was an understated colour, and indeed made the golfs look cool and classy, it does have a slight reference to racing green (they share some of the same paint colours), but nothing more.
Oak Green is sought after because it was the colour no one really wanted.
It first appeared on 88 Campaigns where the colour options were met blue, graphite grey (nearly black), and oak green. the graphite was the most popular colour, the blue next, and the one people didn't want was the oak green.
It then appeared as an option after the Campaigns had run their course. I have a feeling it was only available on 16vs but I'm welcome to be proven wrong. I know by the end of the Mk2 run in 1992 you could get also sorts of combinations.
When it became an option after the Campaigns - it still wasn't a popular colour.
The problem is that as Golfs have got older and more and more scrapped, certain colours have become rarer, and thats why they are so popular now. Pure and simple rarity value.
The irony is that Oak Green is no longer the rare colour. The rare colour is becoming graphite which suffer from looking absolutely rubbish when they get older and so get disguarded more. An even more rare colour is the metalic greeny blue that was on the very early 16vs.

Wahey Tinman ! Where've you been ????
Hope you're well.

Wahey Tinman ! Where've you been ????
My events have rather taken off in a big way and are consuming all my time now. I've driven around Europe about 5 times this year, lost count of the amounts of time i've been in Switzerland, been to the States twice, and I'm about to go spend another 2 weeks in the States in December. Before we start on nexts years schedule which makes this years schedule look easy.
Poor Campaign hasn't even been out of the garage for the last 4 months as I haven't had time. Shes done about 300 miles since last years MOT, of which 100 was driving back from the MOT station. Last time i checked, she had a flat battery. But at least shes stored and out of the weather.
Hows life?
-
Simply because it is subtle and a little classy.
Personally I rate it at No.2, I much rather the limited edition Electric Blue
