Title: Battery Draining
Post by: JMallows on 31 October 2006, 09:59
My battery appears to be broke! The car has been harder to start each morning, and its been on around 11.5V. Then, it failed to start, and the voltage was on 9V!

I thought the alarm was playing up, so unplugged it, and went for a 10 mile drive. The voltage read 13.5V with the engine on, but as soon as i stopped it, it dropped to 12V. I can assume its not the alternator, as it puts out 13.5V +

It seems as though the battery just doesnt seem to want to hold the charge, or something is draining it?

Yesterday, i noticed the glovebox light was on, and must have been on for a few days as i havent been in there for a while... Thnig is, this light is only 5W, so it shouldnt really affect the battery should it?

Thanks

The glovebox light has a switch on it, that you switch on and off. So, it will always be on if i forget to switch it off, or if i knock it when putting something away, and not realise i've done it! It is also not ignition controlled, so will stay on permanantly! I will remedy this soon with a plunger switch though, when i get time!

I didnt think it would affect the battery, but this morning, it had only drained from 11.75 to 11.71V, so maybe it was the light after all!?
