Are all 8v gearboxes the same ??

As far as I know I think they're all the "020" type but I'm not certain  :undecided:

Physical design. Yes. (unless it's a synchro or G/Rallye box.)

Thanks guys

How can i tell then if a box will be the same ?? Found an 8v being broken, same year as mine ... is that enough to go on, or anything else i need to check.

If its an 8v gearbox it will fit straight on and work.  Only difference will be the ratios!  Best to check it is actually a GTI gearbox, at this age its likly its had a new one in its lifetime.  If you crawl underneath and check the codes etched onto the flat area on the bell housing as per:

The one commonly fitted to 8vs is the ACD box :)
