what is a good induction kit to make a nice noise and also a cheap back box is DTM make a good noise?
-
It's been argued before but here goes. Don't waste your money with an inductiuon kit on a valver. Just drill the bottom of the airbox on the side facing the wing and on the front and run a K&N panel filter. It will give you the same results for about 1/3 the money. You lose the pub bragging rights but you have about 50 quid richer to buy the pints with ;D Thats all I have done with my valver. I tried a piper corss induction kit that my mate had lying about and noticed zero difference between it and my drilledf airbox except the cost.
-
u can't put an induction kit on the k-jet anyway...
-
Piper make an induction kit for 16valvers it costs ?89. The cheapest way is to take off the big blanking plate of the innerwing side of the airbox it will take about 10 mins work. Then all you have to do then is take it down the road with your foot flat down on the pedal and you will get a superb sound. Cost ?0.00 and you can put it back on if you want to.

cheers boys il give that a go not the richest as i am a student!
so whats a good cheap exhaust? i like the DTM style does it make a godd throaty noise?

You can just not like we would call one. no cone filter or anything. There is a company out there that makes one but it is about 170 quid. not worth it.

Depends on the maker. I have a Sebring system on mine. Fit isn't all that but it definatly sounds throaty. A bit loaud at times though. Not impressed with it much actually. I'm thinking of replacing it with a magnex system before long though.

My DTM sounds like a spit fire airplane ;D
-
well i want it to be loud under heavy acceleration but not a boy racer droan and i love the DTM classic golf look!
-
that sounds like my DTM then.
Deep when at engine idle,
Quiet when crusing,
Loud on motorways!
It gives you a headache after a while :-\
I dont have the make of the DTM sorry but get a full stainless ehaust system if your after that roar noise.
-
i hate DTM's on golfs, think they look well outdated sorry. letterbox style are sweet looking
buy a piperx or K&N replacment panel filter
as for the induction noise, if your golf is a late spec then it has the different airbox and therefore no blanking plate to remove
but what you can do is pull the resonater tube out of the base of the box. to do this you need to remove the base from the engine bay then pull the tube from the front of the box - with a bit of brute force it will eventually slide out!
there is no need to drill anything either after removing it, as the hole is big enough, and allows the air to reverberate of the insides of the box.
at low rpm's it sounds scooby like but when on song the thing howls!
a very worthwhile 30mins of effort!
-
well mate it's a J plate so yes late spec yes il try removing the tube as u say!
-
so does is it not affect the air flow sensor on the top of the box if i do that! should i leave the filter in if i pull the tube out from the bottom of the airbox?

HI Gambit,
Sounds like you know you stuff, I'm to clever on the terminology used when explaining how to get sound from the airbox, my car is an F plate 1989 16vGTI golf.
Could you run it past me on what to do to get a nice sound from the air box with out spending a penny!!!! ;D
Cheers!! ;)
-
does your golf have the early or late type airbox
early:-
here (http://www.portland.co.uk/P1230001.JPG)
if you have the early box then there is a side panel you can remove from inside the base of the box
late:-
here (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?album=random&cat=10851&pos=-47)
if you have a late box then you can pull the pipe out of the base of the box
either way wont do any damage to the AFM on top of the box
-
cheers mate thats mine the later one so take it i unscrew the box from the car pull the pipe out. do i leave the filter in or do i take it out?
-
Cheers Gambit, my's is the older one i've just been on my lunch and taken the plastic and i can't believe how much difference it makes.!!! ;D
Just one thing tho, will this damage anything??
Cheers,
Garry
-
no Gaz, it wont damage anything. im assuming the panel was put in in the first place to quieten it down!
Ciaran, with yours you need to remove the base of the box from the engine bay, its held on by a rubber band thingy at each corner
once you have the base out then pull the tube out from the front of the box, youll need a bit of brute force, i even used a screw driver to lever it out
then just put the base back in and reconnect everything, and leave the filter in
also, look at getting an aftermarket panel filter such as a K&N or PiperX
-
Cheers Gambit ;) i don't suppose you know what's the biggest battery you can fit to a mk2 GTI 16v 1989 with out making any changes to fit.
Thanks again...

sound gambit il give that a try!
-
It wouldn't be worth going to the trouble of removing the trumpet in the airbox and fitting the original paper panel filter as these are really restrictive.
Get yourself a K&N panel filter as the noise it makes when its on song is worth the money alone and it will stop the depression caused when your put your toe down and try to draw air through an original paper filter.
I removed the trumpet on mine and also drilled the inner wing side of the airbox with a 16mm spade bit so it looked like a connect 4 game. It makes a gorgeous noise and the car is slightly more responsive on the throttle than it was without the mods.
-
will see il remove the trumpet from the front of the air box and then see how it sound slightly reluctant to drill holes incase i do summit wrong and once it,s done it's done and their is nowt i can then do about it! but being young the more noise the better!
also how much for a replacement panel filter?
-
?30 for a replacement panel filter
-
sound loon il give that a go and tell u how i get on on sat ok!
-
well seem to find even removing the pipe from the box it's npt that loud but loosened the lid a little and it lat rip but obviously this isn't a good thing.
will drilling the lower half of the air box make a big difference?
