The cam sender runs on the exhaust camshaft, picture shown with coil removed.

I'll check where the crank sender is.

The car won't start at all if there is no signal from the crank sender.
Maybe the same for the cam sender as well but not totally sure.
What are the symptoms?
Unfortunately a friend of mine has my mk3 golf bentley manual  :embarassed:
But i did own a vr6 for 4 years so might be able to help

cheerz again.my vr is losing power, seems like its spluttering a bit with some backfire at times, theres just something not right  its gotta be 1 of the 2 tho as i have changed pretty much everything else that it couldve been,it sounded like a maf problem to start but i have now changed that for a new 1 but still its not right?! its had new plugs n leads, new air filter, new fuel filter, fuel pump replaced, new lambda sensor all within the last 2 months while trying to source the problem, had auto eleccy out he said lambda, did that no joy,got towed by AA he said maf, changed that and again no joy! it was working fine for about a week then it just didnt want to work 1 morning, and thats been it for a few days! any help would be appreciated as im stuck!

I take it you have replaced the fuel pump and ECU relays?

in the pic above you showed me the sender without the coil on,is it possible to get to that without removing the coil? had to ask before i forgot!

Its been a long time but i think you will need to remove the coil to get to it.
Before you replace that, make sure that you have replaced these relays,
ECU relay(no.167) and the Fuel Pump Relay(no.30).

could the ecu relay cause all the running problems that im having?it did go all of a sudden and started to run badly after a few days where it worked fine

Yes.
I replaced those relays on a mk3 16v earlier this year.
The guy at vw even admitted the ecu relay was a problem, hence why they keep them in stock.

right well i guess i'll be on the fone in the morning then, easier to do that than change the sensor! thanks for all the help its much appreciated, all i want is my vr back!!  mind u when it is fixed the amount of new parts that have been fitted,it should run like a new car!  finger crossed!!

If that fails then i would try a fault code reader.

Is it still popping fuel pump fuses?
Title: Re: crank or cam sensor
Post by: SLIM-DUB on 01 November 2006, 21:32
nope, sorted that, got the pump out and found that the wires were chaffed so whenever i hit a bump or turned sharp, the fuel would slosh up,hit the wire and the fuse would pop! nitemare way to find out, after replacing fuel filter, air filter, lambda's etc etc.......

I told you to check the pump

So did you sort it?

not yet as vw are being awkward, got my old dear to ring em coz i was at work and they told her that there were loads of different types and needed the part number!getting on the case today! just hope it sorts it! the price they quoted was upwards of £30 is that right?seems mucho exspensive to me for that!

right, just had a look to see if i could find the said relays and i cant find either with them numbers on?what number should they be on the actual board?nitemare!!  :embarassed:

I've posted a pic of the relays, in on page 1

Post by: SLIM-DUB on 05 November 2006, 08:58
yeah i know u did  but i cant see either relay? where r they on the circuit board as that is numbered? its really awkward and now vw reckon that it wouldnt be that and are saying its the coil pack! more money,so its going to the garage to have the diagnostics done to see what faults that finds, not throwing anymore money at it! its weird coz the car revved fine but then starts running like a bag of sh!te,after the initial few blips with the throttle? its doing my head in now!

Those relays came out of a mk3 16v, they are on the board above the main fuses.
They should be the same on a vr6 i think, and yes they are a bastard to get to
Unfortunately my mate still has my bentley manual so i can't confirm  :undecided:
