Title: Gearbox finally gave up the ghost
Post by: vwagain on 27 October 2006, 03:19
Well, it finally happened.  My gearbox went pop tonight   Just as i was pulling out of a junction it went, BANG!!!! Lots of smoke in the cabin and oil all over the road and all over the box and under the bonnet   Had to wait over 2 hours for the AA to arrive   Whilst i was waiting i had 3 different cars full of inbred looking scum drive very slowly round my car with obvious theft on their minds!! One scrote actually got out and then quickly jumped back in the car to speed off when he noticed i was sat in my car  . Also watched a p!55 head stumble towards the car and try the bloody handle!!!!!!!!(i had locked it when i first saw him) as soon as he saw me glaring at him from the drivers seat he jumped back and then muttered something about seeing if i was OK before running away!!!!! WTF????? I'm damn sure if id of had to leave the car for any amount of time there wouldn't be much left of it now!!!!!

When the AA finally arrived with a flat bed, i went to get the towing eye from the boot so he could pull it onto the flat bed, after id finally found it and gone round to the front of the car i found the chap under the front of my car attaching the grappling hook round the bloody wishbone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Again, WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to argue with him to allow me to fit the towing eye!!  "nar, it'l be OK on the wishbone mate"    "err, no it wont mate cos the wire will split my front bumper in two",  " but i done loads from the wishbone, itl be fine".  "but i have the towing eye now so you can attach it to that as it should be done."   " oh well, if you want to fit it then i suppose we'll use that."    "to feckin right mate thats what its there for!!!"

Unbelievable!!!!!!

what makes it all the worse, is that i was going to pick a 944 turbo up on saturday with the golf as trade in  And i cant afford the cash price he was asking especialy now i have to buy a bloody gaerbox

Why oh why didnt VW make a gearbox that was actualy up to the job?????!!!!?? Its the second one this car has had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeesus mate that's back luck. Where the hell are you to have the cast of Shaun Of The Dead around when you break down then??
I reckon you might have blown the diff out, you never know you might be able to get another box (even with an engine attached which you could ebay off...), stick it on, then ebay the duff one too?

That's bad news mate sorry to hear that.. our gearbox is ticking in reverse too has been since we bought the car a couple of months back...seems fine in forward gears...

My mechanic said it'll be fine for a while as long as we don't hammer it and don't put too much pressure on it in reverse

He also said the reason these boxes are sh*t is that they're from a Montego?

Is that true?

Gutted for you mate. There are some turds about. I had both my sideskirts knicked off my VR6 last Friday night. And guess what! About a month ago my gearbox gave up too. Got a new one, full recon , my car towed, all work (including VAT) and a 2 year/24k warranty for £550.

Had a look today in the light and there is a big hole blown in the diff casing!!!!!!!  Im told it will be the pinion shaft that has let go

irmscher ,        it is true that the montego/maestro 2.0l/mg/mg turbo models used this gearbox. But it is a VW box which austin rover bought from VW because they didnt have a box of thier own strong enough!!!!!!!!!   They chose the wrong gearbox methinks!!! LOL!!

hmmm does that mean that a box from a Montego/Maestro would potentially fit??
