Title: What does "GTi" stand for?
Post by: GuvGTI on 26 October 2006, 00:09
Was just reading articles for the actual and true meaning of the term GTi.

Heres a caption below:

"What does GTI mean? Nobody knows for sure how a car that was devised by a group of Volkswagen engineers in their spare time and known as the “Sport Golf” got the name GTI. The suffix GT was already commonplace in 1975 but the “I”? Injection? The fastest version of the then new Golf hatchback was the first Volkswagen with fuel injection but the German for injection is einspritzung. So that’s not it. Perhaps it just sounded right....."

I thought it stood for grand tourer injection, but this has given me food for extra thought

Then i checked this:
Definitions of Grand tourer on the Web:

A grand tourer, sometimes initialised GT, is a high-performance automobile designed for long distance driving. Any such car could be considered to be a grand tourer, but the traditional and most common body style is a two door coupe with either a two seat or a 2+2 seat arrangement. Example cars include the BMW 6-Series and the Aston Martin DB9.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_tourer

im even more confused. Is a Golf GTI described as above?

Whats your views???

I thought that too, the GT was inherited from grand tourer which signified speed and elegance and then they added an i for injection as first vw of its kind. Not sure now!

If the german is einspritzung then why wasn't it the GTE?  Or maybe they thought that was a sh!t name for a car......

think thats why opel used the E the german word for injection

the GTI i always thought grand touring injection , maybe it was just to apeal to foreign markets the thought injection was more foreign n therefore more interesting then what take the fith put beggining with E

dont think GT was anythin specific , there was a ford cortina GT and a MGB GT , niether particularly rare

To most people it means drive half inch away from the cars back bumper whilst they are stuck behind some big lorry and cant go any faster so that you think you can keep up with the GTI...

it also means keeerrrr-ching!! to insurance companies

I'm fairly sure that the term GT was used in Italy first, and with "Iniezione" being Italian for injection, it would make sense to use that.

Grande Touring Internationale (or Tourisme - can't remember which).  A fascinating fact from the Mk V GTI launch.  It's nothing German, just a nice romantic abbreviation that has sort of stuck for any fast hatchback.  I prefer Grand To Insure though, I'll remember that one....

From what i read a few years ago, VW couldnt use GTE as Opel had already used it. So they were left with GTsomething. The marketing people got hold of it and made it I because GTI looked good.

I think you'll find that Volkswagen used GTi long before Opel brought out the GTE.  The GTI has been out for thirty years!

yea the should of done to be honest. I did read in auto express or something similar that they did then patent it about a year ago to stop Suzuki doing a Swift GTI or Pug doing a 207 GTI but then I am sure Pug are bringing out a 207 GTI so maybe that was just a load of hoop.

1979 is still after the golf though! Dad had one of them Mantas, slightly older though i think? A silver GTJ. I remember it a little, but not as much as the 1986 Passat he replaced it with! Far superior!

A 1975 Opel with a GTE badge predates the Golf GTI by a year.

Also, Opel were using the GT emblem back in 1968 with the Opel GT, so its likely that they had their bases covered on GTE.
