Hi to everyone , great site! I have a 94 VR6 with a little problem. The vent on the expansion cap keeps leaking as if the cooling system is slighty over-pressurising. I have tried 3 pressure caps and a new expansion ball and compression on all 6 cylinders reads between 9 and 10 bar.
As the compression test came out okay i doubt it is the head gasket starting to go, and it can't be the pressure cap!
The car runs fine , the coolant dial stays bang in the middle.
I really am lost for ideas so hope someone might have some!

Possibly a blockage somewhere????
You could try flushing the whole system and put in clean water....... you never know :)

Cheers. I'm afraid i've already done that. As i said the car doesn't overheat even in traffic. Any other ideas?

Does anyone know anything about testing the expansion tank for exhaust gases? this has been suggested to me as to find out if my head gasket is crud. Any help appreciated!

It does sound like a head gasket problem. Many garages have the ability to check the water in the system, as I understand it they run a simple chemical test to check for the presence of various carbons.
I had it done and it was only a couple of quid.
Cheers,
Max

a bloke i know has the same problem as you, he kept on topping up the coolant level but it keeps spitting it back out of the expansion tank vent, he got a mechanic to look at it and he couldn't find anything wrong with the system. as the car doesn't exhibit any cooling problems and no sludging under the oil filler cap, i think he has just accepted the fact that the coolant seems to find its own level, which is just under the moulding line on the expansion tank.
