Title: AUDI QUATTRO......... HERE'S ONE TO GET YOUR BRAINS TICKING.
Post by: jase555 on 19 October 2006, 10:10
HI EVERYONE, SORRY I AIN'T BEEN ABOUT MUCH LATELY. HAD PROBS WITH MY LAPPY AND INSTEAD OF SORTING IT I HAVE BEEN SAVING OT FINISH OFF AN ENGINE I AM BUILDING.
I WILL EXPLAIN:-
ORIGINALLY I ACQUIRED A PB HEAD AND A 2E BLOCK. I HAVE PORTED AND POLISHED THE HEAD. ITS BEEN TESTED AND SKIMMED WITHIN AN INCH OR 1000TH/INCH OF IT LIFE. NEW TAPPETS, MODIFIED VALVE STEMS, FULL HEAD SET AND PIPER FAST ROAD CAM.

I NOW PLAN TO START THE BLOCK REBUILD BUT JUST HAD A SPANNER THROWN IN THE WORKS.................

I HAVE BEEN OFFERED A GOOD CHEEP AUDI 2.3 20V NON-TURBO'D 170BHP QUATTRO (G). I WAS THINKING I COULD USE THIS AS A DONOR CAR AND PUT THE ENGINE AND RUNNING GEAR INTO MY GOLF. I KNOW ITS A MOUNTAIN OF WORK COMPARED TO THE 2.0L COVERSION I HAD PLANNED SO MY QUESTIONS ARE THESE:-

IS IT WORTH DOING THE AUDI CONVERSION?
SHOULD I LEAVE IT ALONE AND STAY ON COURSE FOR THE 2.0L CONVERSION?
SHOULD I BUY IT FOR THE INTERIOR, FRONT BREAK SET-UP 273MM DISC'S AND 2 POT CALIPERS, ETC?
WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS DO????????????????

THANK FOR YOUR FEEDBACK.

Are you thinking of using the 4 wheel drive system aswell?

nothing is im possible if you have the ability to do it, the tme , money and space, if the body aint bad on the audi and its taxed and tested id run around in it whilst you get the golf done.... i think from a engine conversion, to doing a full on drive train conversion (plus other mods as drive train maybe longer/wider than the golf floor pan..) is too much work, i like them audi's any ways if it aint that bad would be a shame to rip it to bits!!

You will probably see the same or even slightly more power at  the wheels with the 2e/pb combo, particularly if you have ported the head and fitted a more aggressive cam. The drivetrain losses of the quattro will basically nullify the extra horsepower of the 5 cyl engine.

Then of course there is the extra weight you would be adding to the car. Stick with the 2e :)

OK SO IF I STAY WITH THE 2.0L BLOCK COULD I AND WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT FITTING THE QUATTRO SYSTEM TO THAT IF I SAY GOT MY HANDS ON A RALLEY BOX AND TRANSFER BOX?
I THINK I WILL PROBABLY KEEP THE AUDI AS IS THEN JUDGING FROM YOUR FEED BACK. MIGHT MAKE A NICE CAR FOR THE BRIDE. I WHICH CASE I WOULD SELL HER GOLF GTI 8V AND KEEP MINE.

THANKS FELLAS.

I wouldn't do it, you need the S2 engine 2.2 turbo to do the job properly.

Grant at AET is it? has dont this in a MK1 golf it frequently pops up on my audi forum

What engine code is it? is it the 7A or NM?
