Title: steering is heavy please help!

when i go round left hand corners, at a certain point in the steering the car feels like its got no pas and steering goes heavy for a second then when i straighten up its fine again doesn seem to be doing it on right handers though. Guys? any idea much appreciated. Cheers

btw the car is a j plate 8v GTI if that helps?

Well... I had this problem on an old BMW i once had. The belt needed replacing and i was almost out of hydralic oil.
I'm not sure how the work on golfs as i haven't got PAS.

Have you got the right pressure, in the tyres? Old knackered tyres can make the steering heavier too! Probably isn't either of these but worth a check!!

sounds like the pas belt is slipping, happened to me recently in the wet.  :angry:

also check that the boots on the steering rack are intact. if they are split then when the rack is open (steering one way or the other) water can get in and due to hydraulic pressure of the water between the teeth of the steering rack it makes the steering heavy. there is a boot on each side. maybe just one of yours is split. usually happens after spanner monkeys in kwik fit etc hav had a go at tracking lol

well it does look like the tracking has been done as the steering wheel doesnt sit straight when am goin in a straight line so how do i know if its this how do i fix it?

just take the steering wheel off and reset it. its only a 24mm nut under the horn!
