HI, my mk3 gti has a area of rust on the 'seam' just below the gti badge on the rear and also its developing on the door sills just under the rubber seal, just wondered if any of you guys have it on yours because i thought it was uncommon on vws, if so where?
p.s the mystic blue purply/blue pearlesent paint is a fantastic colour but doesn't seam to be that well applied, id love to hear from others with this colour.

i've seen a few rusty early mk3s but my 95N is perfect :smug:
-
Mine had bad surface rust on the door sill seams and also the outer sills where some to55a has jacked the car up with a trolly jack on the seams causing them to split letting the rot to set in  Faild its last MOT on them   The last owner had also fitted schitty ripspeed(halfords!!!) sill covers to hide the rust on the door sill seams  I ripped them off and sorrted the rust out and repainted the sills myself.
Also look for rust around the windscreen at the top and on the tailgate around the handle/key area.

Mines a 97 P and I only have small bits of rust where the bodywork has been damaged.
(which I must get fixed!)
Mine is also Mystic Blue and I love it! Think its the best colour!

ive got rust on various areas of mine... think its common on early ones.. mines a 93 k plate..in white which is now a 'mustard white' as i call it..

i just have many surface bubbles on the tailgate (most comon area i think) and just a touch on the bottom of each arch
-
early mk3's seem to suffer from rust on their tailgates and arches but 95 onward model's had galvanised body's and don't seem to rust as bad (exept where the stonechip's have attacked)....My main problem is peeling/sh*tty lacquer but hopefully getting the paintwork sorted in the new year!!!

Hi all, new on here first post..
We've just in fact got the car back a couple of days ago after having some rust sorted out on our P reg in Mauve..
There was rust on the roof where it meets the top of the windscreen and on the N/S door at the top of the frame.. had it taken down and paint blown in to match the original colour instead of having the whole panels done.. looks pretty good too..
It does seem quite a common problem to be honest..

my '97 P has rust on the top of the roof (where the windscreen meets) from some monkey screen fitter in the past. It was one of those jobs that I always meant to sort but never got round to it and it is now a lot worse and occasionally lets water in. The other bubble is on the drivers do but that is from a bad repair in the past as you can see the repair marks when you look close. also on the rear doors under the window rubbers but only a small amount. At one place I was quoted £800 to repair it all....no chance when the car is only worth about £1.5k. It will probably all get sorted when I come tosell it!!
-
if it's letting water in then i'd get it sorted as soon as poss really mate before it starts causing some damage to trim, possibly electrics etc...
-
i had a 1inch square bubble on the right rear quarter, just below the light, and a couple of tiny chips on the same quarter... took me a couple of days (incl. drying times) and about 50 squid in materials to fix it, beats 500 quote from the bodyshop huh?? the paint finish isnt perfect as its pearlescent satin silver metallic, quite hard to paint, so i might invest a few quid in an "i'll bring the paint, can you take cash under the table?" jobby from a spray shop!!!

on the outer body, rear tailgate(pre 95), rear arches, front wings, door bottoms and top of screen are the common ones
unseen body parts also rot, rear subfrane mounting area, floor to sill joint often looks ok but has festered under the sealant, outer sills usually under the door through careless jacking up.
its not a widespread problem compared to Fords etc of a similar age and i can only say it affects a small percentage of the cars we repair/strip/service.

I've got rust accross the top of the windscreen and the rear quarter under the brake light is really REALLY bad. Both are letting water in and are being sorted before a new interior goes in!
-
I have a 98 R reg with no rust apart from a small bubble behind petrol flap!Strange place I though! :undecided:
-
Seen rust before around rear lights, on roof above front windscreen and in sills on Mk3. Some had all 3, obviously not been taken care of !
I had a small patch in my passenger sill but drivers side OK.
In terms of price, I got my bonnet, both front wings, door sill (rust taken out and new plate welded in) and passenger door sprayed for £400.
Wicked job as well, the guy does Maseratis and Austin Martin so he definately does good work.

mine is a 97 P reg mystic blue one as well... wicked colour!
ive got a bit of bubbling across the bottom of the bonnet just above the headlights, but i think thats mainly down to stone chips, and the sketchy 'bad boy' bonnet spoiler thing!!!
generally i didnt think they rusted real bad... was told that any major signs of rust could of been from poorly repaired crash damage. :undecided:

As far as I can see, I've got just 2 patches of rust - one on driver's side door corner, and the other is over the wheel arch in the engine bay. Both are just bubbly really & not much broken paint.
