Title: Stalling
Post by: ianp on 04 June 2003, 10:48
Anyone help,
I've got a 97 2.0 GTi 16V. Over the last few weeks without warning, as I stop at junctions, traffic signals or  parking, the rev counter is sometimes dropping below 600 revs and the engine is stalling for no apparent reason. I've had the engine management system reset but the problem continues. Can anyone help ?

This has been on the forum a few times as it seems very common to mk3 golfs.

I had the same problem. The way i sorted mine was to get the Temperature Sensor replaced (about ?40 by VW dealer) and to get the throttle valve control recoded (about ?35) by dealer. No independent could do the TVC because it needs to be done on the VW computer.

Mine was over fuelling and so was running really rough. sorted by the Temp sensor.

The stalling i had was sorted by the TVC. However i was told both had an effect on each other so might be worth getting both done.

Hope this helps.

My Mk3 did the same, but i used some carb cleaner in sprayed it into the throttle body, apprently it was the butterfly valve thing that had carbon/oil deposits on it.

Its totally sorted now! I would try this before you take it to the main dealers..

good luck 8)

I took advice from ukflex and had throttle body cleaned. Worked A1. Problem sorted.
