I'm a bit of a stickler for symmetry and only recently noticed that i have only one rear fog light. (The driver's side one)
Looking at the rear it should be symmetrical, as on some cars there's one fog and one reverse light.
Anyway, took off the lamp holder of the left cluster and popped a bulb in the empty socket only for it not to go in the hole?!
Turns out there was a piece of plastic in the hole of the fog on the rear cluster which hadn't been pressed out after maunfacture. So, with the new bulb in place, switched on the fogs and nothing. It appears as if the passenger side fog is not wired up, hence there being no bulb in the socket.
My question is, is this normal and is it easy to wire up the second fog to get symmetry going??
-
Yes it's normal, and it's because we drive on the left, so the fog is on the offside.
-
Its as easy as pie to wire up though... You have to cut out the plastic bit, and put the bulb in for a start (which i assume you did). Then, if you look at the clusters, there are a load of spade terminals near where the wiring connector plugs into. Simply run a cable from the right hand lights, to the left from the fog light terminal. I think its the very last terminal, but check with a multimeter or something... the wire is Grey and White i think :)

N/S fog light is not connected for a good reason! someone is more likely to ram you up the arse because they didnt see your brake lights, as your fog lights are so bright!

That's a good point.
Although, you could always connect up a high level brake light so you can get the symmetry you crave :)

Not true as nearly all of the new cars have twin reverse and twin fog lamps. There are the exception where some small hot hatches have a centre Fog light but on the whole most cars have two.

Hm, true, but don't nearly all new cars have a 3rd brake light somewhere?
-
When i had my mk6 shaped escort which is one with the rounded rear lights that has a single fog light from the factory and on the other side it has the same but no wiring just a empty bulbholder. I did wire in the second foglight at one point, may do the same with me golf :D

Most of them do however I had Cavalier GSi and a Calibra V6 both had twin reverse and twin fog lights and neither had a high level brake light.

I think the issue comes from the fog light being such close proximity to the brake light, mot regs of that time, say that a fog lamp must be mounted centrally, or O/S mounted, but I think that the introduction of third brake lights in the late 80s changed things.. as I remember, cars that had 2 fog lamps generally had them bumper mounted, or on a different light cluster from the brake light. At the end of the day, it comes down to common sense, if your already blinding someone behind you, why increase the risk of them running into you!

I can see your point about people not seeing the brake light but it would only be on when foggy or in heavy rain - hopefully they won't be that close in that sort of weather
My brother has a 94 Cav with fogs on either side just below the brake light and no-one has rammed him up the @rse - ooh err!!
Think i'll try and wire it up - Mallows, from your description I assume you've done it. Does it affect how well you see the brake lights?
-
Can't stand these cars with two fog lights. They look like brake lights to me. And they are so bright it is hard to tell when a car is braking
-
I've never had any problems with them at all, you can clearly see them, and as you say they are only there tobe used in fog, or if some tw@ behind you has their fog lights on, or if they are too close to me!
If someone in front of me has 1 or 2 fog lights on, then i put my headlights on full beam, same if theres someone with foglights on, they always get blinded. :)
