Mines a 16 valve and at 4000 rpm I'm doing approx 90 mph.
Approx 500 revs for every 10 mph is what I get. So 80 mph is 3500 rpm
4500 rpm = 100 mph.
Those are rough as wind and downhills give variations.

my 95 8v does bang on 3k at 70 mph .
not sure about higher speeds as thats as fast as the law allows me to go.
-
my '97 1.6 AEE does the same - 3k at 70mph

My 95 ady engine 8v does about 3000 at 70mph and 5000 at a tonne!!! on a private airfield (called the m62) of course :lipsrsealed:

mines an AGG unit, were different gearboxes available then because all these posts seem to say that at 70 mph its 3000 rpm and then from what ive gathered its about another 500 rpm per 10 mph, so why is mine so low geared???

are you on standard size wheels and tyres?
-
yeah the standard 9 spoke alloys and the correct tyres, i dont get it? :undecided:

Most of these depend on the gear ratio's and the diffs final drive ratio.

As Len says, its down to gearbox really... can't rem ratios exactly or how to work out, but think in 5th it should be 23.3mph/1k revs.

On an 8v (which has an 020 box) ratio for 5th is 0.805:1 with a final drive of 3.667:1
and for 16v (02A hydraulic box) ratio for 5th is 0.837:1 and final drive of 3.684:1
I must add there were no different ratio's on the above boxes for the 2.0 8/16v, so unless you have had a different box fitted the final drive and 5th ratio should be the same. The diesel and 1.8 020 boxes did have a different 5th ratio but had identical final drive and for the 02A the diesel's had different 5th and different final drive. Thing's like brake drag, clutch drag and even the road your driving on can affect speed/rev ratio... The gearboxes do have a type code stamped on them (3 digit mine is a CHE) and this will tell you what ratio you have.

Hi,
96 'N' 8V GTI AGG block, CHE - 020 box does 3000-3200rpm @ 70
Could it be the clutch on the way out or slipping?
