Title: Digi 8V problems when cornering.
Post by: SHimmer45 on 15 October 2006, 16:58
Hi all.

having a bit of a problem with my Digi GTI.

when im going round right handers it seems to cough and judder as soon  striaghten up it sorts itself out and  carries on as normal
I have had the C02 etc set so it is running fine its just this one niggle.
i have checked the exhaust and sealed the 1 blow that was there and this hasnt made any difference.
the only thing i can think that might need changing is the HT leads and Distrubuter Cap.

Any help or ideas would be appriceated

thanks

ok it has had a new fuel filter fitted.
would checking that require taking the pipe of the fuel tank i assume?

There could be a load of poop in the tank... which is blocking up the intake when you're cornering, although I think there's probably a simpler explanation.

Bad or lose earth from the body to the engine, try connecting a seperate wire directly from the engine to the earth terminal on the battery, then give it a test drive...
Or a split in the induction pipes somewhere thats opening up, and sucks in air, as the engine moves while cornering, worth a look..

Wouldn't it do that if you revved the engine while the car was stationary if that was the case? Engine rocking etc...?

A good check of all your wiring will proberly sort it, I had my valver tuned recently and on the way home just after I over took a motor bike hitting about 90 (on a private road) a great puff of brownish smoke came out and I lost all power. Had to pull over (with egg on face!!), anyway took it back and it turned out to be a wire on dizzy was disconnecting causing the rev limiter to come!!!

Give all your engine mounts a check also. 1 might have failed causing the engine to tilt or rock when going round the corner.

If its a pre-mid 89 digi then according to the haynes manual there is a lift pump in the fuel tank with the gauge sender. To access it i think you need to lift the carpet and take it out from the top there. I'm going to have a look at mine over the next couple of days and check all the wires.

It does say from mid 89 onwards certain models had a single fuel pump, although doesn't say what models!

Digi's do indeed have a lift pump in the tank. It's under the black plastic circle under the boot carpet.  Don't know how to remove it but i'm sure its easy!

All MK2 GTIs have a lift pump & a main pump, the only models that didn't were the G60 variants, which just have a single main pump in the tank.

is it ever right hand bend or just when you boot it????????
i am wondering if you are starving the head of oil which is a common problem when going fats round corners. if it is only when you are going fast then iether slowdown or fit a windage tray between your sump and your block. g werks do a good one for 30 quid or awsome do the same one for 45. look on there web sites.

regards
jase

does it worst when on the gas thru the bend. was fine when i brought it but the problem appeared after changing cam belt oil plugs etc.

surely if there was oil starvation it would do it thru left handers too??
i do need to fit or clean the gause filter in the sump as i get a warning buzzer when REALLY turning tight in right handers.

As well as doin this going to chuck some money at the ignition system ie new cap rotor arm and HT leads. just to eliminate and issue here as the not a huge amount of money.
btw any recommendations  for HT leads was just goin to get a set from GSF
