Title: not a gti but ......
Post by: richy_b on 07 January 2004, 22:37
hi all,
ive just bought a 1990 golf, fitted with the big bumper kit etc, however it only has a 1.3 cl engine, i couldnt go for the full on gti with 5 points and only being 18 so i went for the 1.3 after being told they can be tuned very well! do you know if this is true???? and can anyone maybe give some examples of what to tweak first,

great one guys,
thanks.

i think the usual for a start exhaust system, then maybe a different carb as i think the standard ones are pants, there may be a webber alternative then a nice k+n pancake filter on, then get it  set up on a rollin road youll get a few bhp, then theres gas flowing and maybe a different cam, i dont know off the top of my head what the standard power out put is ?????

thanks people, well the dub is already fitted with a exhaust system with a twin dtm box and a k&n to go with it thinking of a carb but what type of weber would be best?? oh and does anyone know any good sites where i can buy this stuff from???

I'm afraid to say its not really worth tuning the 1.3, its about 55bhp as standard.
Enjoy the fuel economy until you can afford to insure a faster car.

Get a 8v gti cam, you'll notice the difference!
they cost next to nothing at the scrappy.

this is a really stupid question but how do i no wot an 8v engine is in the scrappys as the ones near me are useless?? sorry to be thick but not having one dont help?? will i need to change the tappets or just the cam??
cheers rik
Title: Re:not a gti but ......
Post by: golfvr6 on 07 January 2004, 22:57
take someone with you that knows what the gti engine looks like. your tappets will be ok providing they are not excessively worn.

just the cam, an 8v engine has a slim rocker cover and only on camshaft, the 16v one have a 16v casting on the inlet manifold thing, if its a gti and doesnt say 16v under the bonnet then is an 8v and its what you need!
Title: Re:not a gti but ......
Post by: richy_b on 07 January 2004, 22:59
well a 16valve engine is much bigger than the 8valve just try to image the space needed for 2 cam shafts and then the space for one...

i hope this will help you

where are you at dubslug?
Title: Re:not a gti but ......
Post by: dubslug on 07 January 2004, 23:01
im from basingstoke, i have two scrappies here one of which i wont use. and a few more fairly local to me, so an 8v will have the same sort of rocker cover as mine??
does it matter abt the year of car??
Title: Re:not a gti but ......
Post by: Veedubgt18v on 07 January 2004, 23:02
it doesnt matter what year of car, and the rocker cover will be very similar to yours

i thought it needed to be a 1.8 Driver for you to take the cam out of 8v GTi

you can also take the 8v GTi manifold and put it on a 1.8 Driver

Nope, the 8v gti cam will go in the 1.6.
The 1.6 and 1.8 are the same engine expect for crank and pistons. Thats why 1.6 engine blocks are actually stamped 1.8, cos they only made one block.

hey richy b i found some info on tuning 1.3's apparently you can fit polo gt pistons for a compression ratio of 11.5:1 with a 0.5mm re-bore, get a high lift/longer duration cam, gas flow the head and get a weber carb. use a pole g40 exhaust manifold and matching front pipe into an gti 8v system. the manifold is so you can fit a bigger bore exhaust but you will need to modify the hot air pick up for the carb or you we get probs in cold weather. this will also keep your engine looking standard' but should be good for upto 1oobhp

thanks veedub, im putting in an order for the weber when i get paid but at the moment its gonna cost around 230 plus vat any idea of anywhere i can get it cheaper???? oh and the thing about the exhaust..... half way down the system its been made bigger im not sure if this is because it got  gti size zorst at the end or wot, its got the big bumper kit some and ideas would be great.....is the only difference with the pipework the size of the pipe or wot??

again thanks :)

a bigger bore exhaust means the gases can flow out quicker really, not sure where you can get the weber cheaper try ringing around garages and spares places see what you can do, should make a good amount of difference tho and is a good starting point!
