Title: Im A Dubber Again!
Post by: bunter on 12 October 2006, 18:21
well ive recently found myself wanting another mk2 golf as i have always loved them and i wish id never sold my first one. the plan was to get one around xmas time or just after. well things never go to plan and today i have been all the way near dover to have a look at a H reg Mk2 16v in atlas grey. the guy had it up for £450 ono with 6 months mot and a stack of history which was stupidly cheap!! so to cut a long story short i bought the car today for the princely sum of £425 and will be picking it up on saturday which brings me to my next question!

the car has no tax at the moment and my cover note for my insurance wont be here by saturday and the current owner isnt insured anymore either, so i have no way of taxing the car before picking it up saturday. my first thought is to take the tax disc out of a mates car and put that in the golf just to get me home. only thing is its a 2 hour journey down the M2, M25, M11 and finally the A14. although i know this is illegal and i am fully willing to accept the consequences i would like to narrow the chances of being nabbed, does anyone know if they are using these cameras that check tax discs on these roads?

anyway heres a pic of the beastie i bought!! plans for the mitue are to get her home, tidy the rust spots up, lay the rear wiper flat, put later spec half smoked rear lights on and thats about it until i save some cash. if anyone has any decent parts for a mk2 then let me know as i may have them off you!

thanks for youre time :)

its does need some minor bodywork doing as the scuttle panel near the excess wiper hole is corroding, a small patch on the o/s rear qurter, a little under the bootldi and also the o/s front wing. if i remember correctly the mk2 wings just bolt on on? if so il just buy a second hand wing in atlas grey when one comes up in good nick :)

not condoning this but just risk it ,

ive driven cars back from all over the place without tax , milton keynes to liverpool , london to birmingham then to swansea , if youve got the car insured even if you get a producer you should ok without the docs till they turn up n ya can hand em in ,

 bargain tho

If you're not sure, don't risk it.
Ask the seller if you can leave it on his drive till monday or tuesday, wait till your cover note turns up, tax the car, then drive home safe and sound.
You could ask your insurer to fax or email you a copy of the cover note, then when you arrive on saturday to pick the car and documents up, you can drive straight to the nearest post office and tax it.

I have risked it before, but I don't think I'd do it again. You could end up with a hefty fine and points and it's not worth it for a 400 quid car.

Did you know that Britain has 20% of the entire worlds CCTV cameras? So you're even more likely to be picked up on camera in the uk than anywhere else.

Does the car have one of the new computerised mot certificates???
If it does you can buy the tax online, the database checks that there is an insurance policy active on the car. All you need is the registration and the 11digit reference number off the logbook. As soon as you've paid online the car wont be flagged up on the pesky car tax cameras as being untaxed.

Welcome back to the dub fold

Good thinking Tobz. I did mine online the other day and it's a piece of p1ss, basically if it's on the database you can tax it. The only thing is you'll be without a valid tax disk on the car until it arrives which is still illegal even though you've paid for it. I just kept my old disk on until the new one arrived a few days later and if the plod check your reg then they'll know it's taxed and tested anyway, your worry then maybe that the car isn't in your name yet. I'd probably risk it providing I'd done the tax online because you'll probably be ok unless you get stopped by a copper that's just being a complete @rse, but it's your choice at the end of the day.

you could always do the del boy technique of putting a note saying "tax in the post" where the tax disc should be.

The Whole Tax Disc/Insurance thing really pi55es me off.  I guess the only historical reason for it was to encourage you to make sure to insure your car, so if plod saw a tax disc he knew at least someone was insured on it.    In this day and age though, where it's a quick computer check to see these things, I don't see how it's remotely relevant.

When I wanted to sell my Escort, the tax expired while I was still trying to get it MOT'd.  Because it was parked on public roads (and because it's supposedly a lot of hassle to undo) I didn't want to SORN it, so I had to get it temporarily added to my insurance, at a cost of £70, just so I could get it taxed! I had no intention of driving it anywhere (I have a VR6... why would I want to put myself through driving a 1.3, J plate Escort again...)  A stupid, Stupid, archaic idiotic system.

[/Rant]

Looks a nice motor there!  At some point when I've paid off all my main debts I reckon I'll get myself a Mk2, just to see what all the fuss is about...  I like the looks of a tastefully modded one.
