These recent posts pitting different make cars against each other has got me thinking.....
my mk3 with full cat back exhaust and run on v-power against a mk4 1.8t with same things......was close to testing this out but it was rush hour and there wasnt the space....
both 150bhp normally aspirated vs forced induction....Hmmm
-
shouldnt be testing on public roads

yawn

when i had my mk3 16v, it was de-catted with exhaust and had an induction kit
used to beat standard 1.8t's quite easily, allthough im sure my mk3 was chipped by a previous owner too
-
Mines chipped and has dicked a few 20vt's :lipsrsealed:
Different game when the mk4's chipped tho '
Also I heard (cant remember cos its was ages ago when i was looking for a valver) that the 16v was under rated by VW to make the VR6 more appealing as the two's true power outputs werent that far apart unless the 16v was rated on paper as 150. Someone may be able to elaborate further here??

Yep. Before i started toying with mine i struggled to lose mk3 valvers. God bless the tunability of turbos.

My 16v has been rolling roaded twice and gave a max of 153.6bhp and only had a K&N at those times.
keep thinking of having it chipped!
-
Mine was standard & chipped at dubsport by the guy who had it before me - was doin 168 then so no idea what it is now

They both might have similar power figures, but the 1.8T has about 50lb/ft more torque than the 16v. Plus its only the early 1.8T that have 150bhp, later ones are 180bhp. Audi/Skoda/Seat ones have 220bhp+ from the same engine.
-
if the vr and gti were the same horsepower roughly does that mean we can ask the question between vr vsmk3 vs 1.8t? because mines been rolling roaded, before it was de-catted,new plugs and leads, coil pack and air filter and it was running at 189.9bhp at the wheels, done by well lane turbo centre. oh and len look into the chip bud, well worth it aslong as u get it all sorted by the proper people it'll go like fook and improve on everything even fuel!

Well it's lucky for some
I have an extremely long stretch of country roads that i can use, which is great if you know where you can overtake.

Thinking of getting a remap to but still spending my hard earned money on sorting out the looks, go on len get it done and let me know what difference it really makes.......

Well if Darren can get 176bhp from his 16v then that should be achievable. I have driven a Mk4 1.8t with exactly those figures and that was good!
-
the other thing to take into account is power to weight ratio's.
even if the bhp figures are similar... isnt the mk4 a good deal heavier than the mk3? so with similar outputs, granted the turbo might have more torque, but the 16v could actually be quicker 8)
