Title: ABS Light???
Post by: Pimpster on 04 June 2003, 19:08
Just come back from a little town driving and I noticed my ABS light has come on. I turned the engine on and off 3 times thinking it might be a stuck switch of sorts. Still on. Drove round my works car park - brakes are fine.

Anyone got any ideas?

i know everyone will say 'get it checked out asap' which stands to reason and i am getting it checked out first thing tomorrow, but i didnt know if anyone knows of any little issues it might be related too?

I know on my Audi if that comes on its usually one of the sensors has gone slightly out of adjustment......hasn't done it with mine yet but apparently its a common thing.

Not that much to worry about really. You should still have normal braking available. Rich is probably right, it probably is one of the road wheel sensors playing up. Most of the time they get clogged up with dirt and other crap. Try removing all the sensors and lightly cleaning them. Otherwise you could test each one for continuity.

Yep, its possible that the ABS sensor is dirty.  Although normal breaking is not affected the ABS and traction control  will not function. As they are both linked. Usually the system rights its self after igition check. However if not the EMS (Engine Management System) will store a Fault code. This code will have to be cleared plus the problem fixed ( if there is one) . ABS units and pumpes etc are very expensive ......GOOD LUCK

Cheers for all your responses. Very reassuring. Had the AA bloke out (actually very good nowadays eh?! 15 minutes from call to turn up).

He checked all fuses (all ok)

Checked brakes (all ok)

Checked ABS management in engine (visually tho - and all ok)

I have normal braking so can drive it. He pointed out that if the brake warning light and ABS light is on i shouldnt drive it (as per the manual). However only ABS light on so its ok to drive. He said exactly what you all said - The sensor.

So i've got it booked in to an independent (see new 'Main Dealer - No Thanks') Thread. I'll update when I know more. :)

I've also got this sorted now.

It turns out the offside rear sensor needed replacing.

With the diagnostic work and replacing the sensor labour worked out at ?84 and the sensor itself was ?78. So ?162. Bugger.

To be honest the brakes were far keener without the ABS and i only did it because it won't pass the upcoming MOT without it. Damn that MOT.
