Title: Engine Conversion
Post by: VWaxilMK1cab on 11 October 2006, 17:40
Has anyone got an recommendations for garages (preferably in north of england - leeds\yorkshire'ish) who have experience of an engine swap?

Also, I've heard that someone near me has put a 1.9tdi into a mk1 convertable. Surely this engine will weigh a lot more than the petrol?

I quite fancy the 1.8 20v T block from a SEAT or GOLF GTI Turbo, A3 S3 etc. but will that mean I have to swap my rear drums for disk brakes?

Any help apprieciated.

Chris.

I've no recommendations for a garage to do an engine swap, but there's a company called IVC who were just outside Leeds city centre and they've recently moved to some new premises round and about but I'm not sre where. They are VW specialists and if they don't do engine conversions then they may be able to point you in the right direction. Some of the companies that do them though are charging about 6-7k+ for them ! If you can get one done for 4-5k including engine I reckon you're doing ok.

I don't think that the weight is the problem with doing a TDI conversion, I think the problems are with the fuel lines and other bits and bobs that make it harder to do. A TDI would be a good conversion for a cab though with some nice low down torque and it would be something different. There's a member on here called A7 UFO who seems quite knowledgable about the TDI conversion if I remember rightly.

A 20vT is the obvious choice, reasonably new engine, reliable, easy to tune and lots available but you'd deffo need to upgrade your brakes if you want to stop.

Madone put these links up in the garage section so have a nosey at this thread. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=26874.0

The tdi that went into the mk1 wasn't a modern day PD engine, (as A7UFO/Simon will tell you the PD engines are a right git just to physically fit into the bay) it was an old smaller mk3 lump i think.

Rear brakes dont do a lot but drum brakes are cack anyway, i'd swap them for discs regardless of an engine swap. You could try ringing awesomegti, have a chat with them about the possibilities. They've done some crazy things in their time.

Thanks for all the info guys...
I've found this place near me who do the 1.8t 20v conversion that I'd like to do on my golf...

They want £7500 + VAT tho!! altho it is the 225bhp TT engine and does have a warranty and all their work looks the dogs!

I've no chance of doing it myself, but if I could, these guys will supply an engine, box, clock & wiring for £1500...

Does anyone fancy earning some cash doing me an engine conversion?? ;)

I'm tempted to get a loan for the £7500... but when you think about what cars you could buy for £7.5k it just doesn't make sense!
hmmmm...
