Title: rev to just under 2000rpm and cuts out flashing oil light
Post by: golfmk3gti on 11 October 2006, 14:32
Hello all

Has anyone experienced this problem, if you have please please let me know the verdict.  I have a mk3 2.0 golf GTi N (95).  The car starts and revs up to just under 2000rpm, then dies and the oil light flashes.  This is happening whether itÂ’s a hot or cold start.  I can sometimes get round this by putting some oil in but there is already too much in there and I am starting to worry.  I have seen another thread with similar problems but that problem seems to be with peoples cars cutting out whist driving mine only does it when it starts (touch wood!!)

Thank you in advance your help is greatly appreciated.

can you describe the problem a bit better please. Does this happen every time? Can you actually drive the car? Does it rev by itself or does it go to 2000 when you press the pedal? also what engine 8v or 16v or vr6?

Sorry it is an 8v engine.  It doesnÂ’t happen every time I start the car but more than I want it to.  It revs up to about 2000 on its own, maybe not quite as much as 2000.  If I put my foot on the accelerator it will go up to around 3500 and then cuts out.

1st thing to do would be to replace the blue temp sensor in the coolant flange. Its common for them to fail. Get a genuine vw replacement.

Check for holes in the breather pipes  , if its an 8v check the pipe that comes from the front and climbs up against the cambelt cover , can go on the top there , near the black box .
