Title: Started spending on my Rallye now !
Post by: gibby on 11 October 2006, 11:04
Well, it didn't last long until I've started spending on my Rallye.  I've just had a new head unit put in, fairly cheap really and I think it keeps in with the styling and age of the car. So one of these.

Then, I've been keeping my eyes out for some new wheels, BBS are nice, but the prices of them these days are ridiculous and most kicking about are 15s anyway and I wanted at least 16s, so I put a bid on ebay last week and I'm awaiting delivery of these today. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I love em. They wont be on until the spring as I'm using my others for the winter for now. A nice set of TH Mono's 8 x 16s with the black detailing on them, with nice stretched Toyo tyres 195/40/16s. Opinions appreciated, both positive and constructively negative.

Wheels look great!

Not sure about the HU you tight Northener! Should have been on of them Pioneer ones that jv was telling me to buy! That really would be in keeping with the car!

(DEH7000) or something like that!

dont need a stereo in a rallye, it makes its own music

cant wait to see those rims on a red rallye, you going to stick some spacers on the back ?
Title: Re: Started spending on my Rallye now !
Post by: gibby on 11 October 2006, 11:15
I know Len but it was only cheap (and with me being northern and all that  ) and it's a blaupunkt and I use it to listen to the radio and play CD's through four speakers, so I'm not too fussed about a bit of gangsta boom boom and all that ! As Toph says, you don't really need a stereo in one anyway.

Toph, not even thought about spacers to be honest. :undecided:

Hey jv, I know, what is it with these compomotive wheels these days ! Hmmm, I think I bought the right size, will the brakes fit in them ?

If dubmeister still stocked the black powder coated ones in that size I'd have bought them.

HU will be cool, i love having mp3/wma on mine, makes a huge difference not havin to store a million CDs in the car, just keep a couple of mp3 disks and jobs a goodun.

Iv never been a massive fan of those wheels tbh gibby. Iv no doubt the wideness and streched tyres will look class though. And the last time I said that it was about ATS cups :lipsrsealed: Sure they will look great on the rallyee. Stick them on when they arrive though wont ya, just to show is a picture

Thanks for the comments Phil, although I doubt I'll put them on to take a pic because basically, I can't be @rsed ! You'll have to wait until the Spring, or get yourself to one of the early shows.

Looking good, What are you doing with the old wheels then?

Staying as my winter wheels I reckon. You on the scrounge fielder !

Loving the choice of wheels gibby

The HU looks alright, as long as it works who cares what it can and can't do and how much it cost...it's still a Blaupunkt! In fact, I think that's the one I had a look at cos mines half knackered...

Hey Dinx, I know it didn't take me too long did it ! But I was eyeing up Mono's at E38 so I knew I liked them, I was going to wait to see if the powder coated ones came back in stock at Dubmeister but then these came along at a good price so I couldn't resist.

Thanks all for replies so far.

Wheels are not my cup of tea but it's your car! lol

I assume from the stretched tyres you are more for the "show" than the "go" as I wouldn't give her too much stick round the twisties on them matey.

Hope she continues to please in every other way!

Cheers

Loud music = sh!t music, unless you have the proper sh!t to play them through.

Wheels are spot on, and keep the grill red, only gays and pussies would change it  :lipsrsealed:

I look forward to going for a buzz in it.

Like it. Wheels will look sweet on your rallye too. See how they look when on, but spacers could help to fill the arch a bit better.

i think joe could be right with the grille. He has been right with his suggestions for mine! Could just break up the redness a little!?! :undecided:

Generally, I tend not to take styling advice from a man who owns more pairs of shoes than I own underpants.

However he does have a point, but I really like that style of grille.. it needs a little breakup in the colour, so try a chrome VW centre badge instead.

Those wheels look sweet mate but does this "started spending" title mean that in 12 months you'll have a awesome Rallye thats one of the best ever seen and absolutely no money at all

lol - Who knows, but as I've also just moved into my new house we'll have to wait and see. There's a damn good standard of Rallyes out there these days though.

well gib, you know what i think about th mono's. they'll look spot on and the black detailing will make them look a bit 'custom'!!

still think you should do the slats of the grill black........ ;)

Thanks Joe,  but you know that I thought that one at E38 looked gash ! It just didn't look right to me somehow and you're normally so good on the car styling front !

I assume from the stretched tyres you are more for the "show" than the "go" as I wouldn't give her too much stick round the twisties on them matey.

Hey Nick, I'm not really one for throwing it around twisties anyway, I told you that I've been driving it carefully !

Wheels are spot on, and keep the grill red, only gays and pussies would change it :lipsrsealed:

Cheers Slick and I totally agree, Joe & Phil, you are both gay and pussies !

See how they look when on, but spacers could help to fill the arch a bit better.

I'm going to see how they are, but the back sits quite low anyway and I've a feeling that they may rub with spacers on but I'll not know until I get them on.

sure i saw the rims on e-gay  might even have had them on watch , were the on an oaky or dark mk2?

Aye, they were on a dark grey mk2. They were up for sale on E38 about a week and half a go for more than I ended up paying for them.

Thanks for the comments Simpson, Neaty and Slammed. :afro:

i think joe could be right with the grille. He has been right with his suggestions for mine! Could just break up the redness a little!?! :undecided:

As already mentioned Phil, you and Joe are gay !  I actually love the fact that it's so red and I'm going to keep it that way. Eventually I'm going to get the front end resprayed as there are a few scuff marks here and there, but it's deffo staying bright red !

Generally, I tend not to take styling advice from a man who owns more pairs of shoes than I own underpants.

However he does have a point, but I really like that style of grille.. it needs a little breakup in the colour, so try a chrome VW centre badge instead.

pmsl at the first comment ! You can all leave my red grille alone ! It's staying red ! Anyway, it has a breakup in the colour because it's always full of dead flies.

I dunno yet Martz, I might change the back pipe eventually, get bits of the front end resprayed and the teeny tiny bits of rust sorted and she'll be pretty much mint. Nick did all the engine upgrades so I can just concentrate on the spit and polish part !

I'll keep my eyes peeled for some inspiration though so you never know.

Oh dear ! That didn't last long did it until I've really got to spend some money on my Rallye ! I got in it last night and started it up and she sounded like a bag of spanners, so I open the bonnet to see sparks flying about as the alternator fan is scraping against some of the metal at the side. I've no idea how this happened as it was ok when I left it yesterday morning, but AA man seems to think that it's somehow worked loose over time and gradually it's gained more play in it and so it's fooked. It was a new, genuine (lots of £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£s) one as well. I'm not sure if the alternator itself is knacked or just the external fan and pulley that the belt sits on. It's awaiting my garage to pick it up from my parents house to get it sorted.

I think I'm more miffed that what's gone wrong is a part that has only just been replaced so is relatively new.

On the plus side, there were a few problems that I already knew about that I'm now going to ask them to do while its in there, so I've asked them to give it a full waxoyl for the winter, to look at the whining wheel bearing and to check out the blow on the exhaust. I'm trying not to let my enthusiasm slip, but after some probs in the summer with my cab it's starting to wear thin.

Still, onwards and upwards eh ! :afro:

I've asked them to give it a full waxoyl for the winter,

You big softy northener!!! Get yourself a saucepan, a paintbrush and a can of black waxoyl. Heat some up on your cooker and get stuck in. I found the brush method best to get a controlled even coat over the whole underside and you can brush it on nice and thick in the places that matter. Of course the missus wasn't too happy when I managed to get black waxoyl all up the wall in the kitchen!!!
It takes quite a few hours to make a really nice job of a complete waxoyl and a garage are gonna charge a fortune unless they rush it.

Post by: Uruk Hai on 21 October 2006, 19:17
Waxoil is just what it says wax and oil and its used a treatment to prevent the formation and/or spread of rust, most people use it under the car and inside the doors and back panels ect. When I've used it I've bought the gallon tins and put it in a bucket of boiling hot water to get it as thin as possible which makes it a lot easier to work with, then its just a case of spraying or brushing it on which ever part of the car you want it and when it cools down it sets.

Post by: gibby on 22 October 2006, 14:24
The garage normally charge me about £50 to waxoil the whole lot. I spend that much money with them that for the sake of buying some and getting a messy kitchen and then getting my hands dirty I'll just get them to do it while it's down there. I've worked in an office for too long.
Title: Re: Started spending on my Rallye now !
Post by: tobz. on 23 October 2006, 13:20
and then getting my hands dirty

And anything else that is within a mile of the stuff, I usually end up covered head to toe in the stuff. Even my cat strolled past while I was doing the van and ended up with a bit of rust protection!!!

£50 sounds like a fair price Gibby, it's definately not a nice job.

Well, got my Rallye back from the garage now, I can't say I've missed the fuel bills, but I certainly missed the lady in red. It's good to have her back.

When it was in the garage I had the wheel bearings checked over but no problem found, I've had the small exhaust blow welded up, it was a tiny hole apparently,I had the alternator fixed, a good coating of waxoil everywhere and a new sunroof seal put on as it was leaking.

Sorry if it was leaking mate, never took it out in the rain so I wouldn't have noticed.

No worries. You said it probably needed a new seal anyway.

mine gushes more than leaks....on occasions

Ahh poo ! Exhaust is now blowing and clunking and the lifetime warranty only extends to the person that bought the exhaust in the first place. and that wasn't me  I rang the place that the exhaust was done at and they've booked me in for tomorrow lunchtime to hopefully weld the pipes that are coming apart from the box and sort out the clunks, while I'm there I'm probably going to change the back pipe from the DTM (sorry Nick) to either a nice big round or oval one. VW Golfs ! You got to hate them and love them with equal passion !
