After replacing the battery tray and seeing how flimsy the subframe was i started wondering how tough the mk2 would be in a crash. Check this out.

Compared with other cars id say not very! Might be time we slowed down a little as our mk2's arnt as strong as we thought.
-
I rolled mine at about 50-60 (can't remember the actual speed) and i crawled out with some cut's bruises and a mild concussion. I am happy with how tough they are.
-
^ same here, although i walked out through where the windscreen was
they are tough enough, but it depends what car you hit, a mk2 is a small car by todays standards
-
Compared with most other cars of the same age I'd say they were very strong, that's why there's so many of em left!!!
I've carried out quite a bit of private crash testing on mk2 golfs over the years ;)
First test involved writing off a mk2 astra, golf lived to tell the tale.
Second test involved removing several roadsigns as I gleefully hurtled my way straight over the middle of a roundabout (in the same golf as test one). I didn't bother to fix it this time but sold it on for spares. About 5 years later I saw it driving through newmarket still soldiering on!!!
Third test involved careering out of control at 70+mph straight into a steep bank on a country road in my last oakie. It ended up wedged between the banks on either side of the road, once I 'd managed to kick the door open I emerged with just a broken nose from head butting my momo. The car was dead but I'd survived :)
Now I'm happy with the strength of the mk2 I don't feel the need to crash my current one!!!

I think considering that the youngest ones are now about 14 years old they're quite strong, my first Golf was written off when someone in a Omega was pushed across the road and head on into me by a white van w@nker. The car was in quite a bad state after but I thought it took the impact very well considering that an Omega is a big motor and we were both doing about 20mph at the point of impact, safety has moved on in leaps and bounds now but I'm so glad I wasn't in some tin foil box like a Renault 5 or some other small car as I think it could have been a different story ! Anyway if I thought they were that unsafe I wouldn't have bought the one I have now and I've slowed down a lot over the last 5 years or so, perhaps I'm just getting old

I know its not the same but this has got to give the ricers goose bumps, i know it did to me...

A lot of cars would have ended up like the honda in crash that bad, gives you food for thought though :undecided:
-
I had a white C reg 1.3 a few years back and i went into the back of a stantionary car at 50 mph! Wrote his car off, pretty badly crippled the Golf, no injuries to myself and only cost me £200 to repair!
Bloody solid cars!
Will see if i can find some pics of the damage later...
-
not tempting fate or ever wanting to be in a(nother) car crash but everytime you see a crash test film, the cars f**k up royally!! whenever you see crashes on the road by their findings everyone would die but the amount of people that walk away from the types of crashes they test against is alot higher than i always expect.
did that make sense?
-
I could of had that LOL
-
just spare a thought for the police and ambulance crews who have to deal with this stuff every day but it wouldnt be a dummies head on the parcel shelf!
-
Car strength is all relative, I think for the size of car from their time, they are tough.
But compared to a new SUV, Range Rover etc , Volvo in fact any modern big heavy car....lets just say I stay out of their way.
-
exactly, tough for their time, but not compared to anything new, with all the side protection etc. The aim is not to crash me friends.

I acctually remember seeing your golf after your crash, If i remember right the bonnet smoothed right out and the worst damage seemed to be to the wing and bumpers.
-
Yup that's all the damamge that was done. Not bad for an old banger
That Polo was awesome  Still going around now (put it back to standard before i sold it)

I pretty much knew who you were when i first saw a post from you on the forum (i just kept quiet so i didn't make a fool of myself) . Recognised your car from ya signature you had at the time. I remember when that car was standard and all those parts you used to buy and all that lovely discount i gave ya  Oh those were happy days at GSF...
-
lol yeah how could i forget...
"Hi its the skater boy, Yeah ive broken my Steering colum / Bonnet / exhaust / suspention strut / break disk / gear linkage / dash dials / etc etc, you got any replacements in stock?"
"yeah sure how did you break it?"
"well....i undid this screw and took off the spring and ........"
I think 60% of my car is now built out of GSF replacement parts. I still go in there every week for more stuff. Still get all those lovly discounts, appart from your old boss it seems everybody else has left tho. :undecided:

Gruff is still there but is usually out in the van (the young chap who used to work with me) and the girl has had a baby so she left. You seen that they can now get hold of anything from the FK catalogue?!!
I remember those conversations, how could i forget!?
-
lol nice, ive already got FK coilovers but could use some Strut top mounts, Might have to give them a go!
And she had a baby? Awww no fair, she was worth a poke provided you hit it from the back and shut your eyes  her Beatle was nice.
-
Deffinately worth some loving!
Her Beetle was wicked, you ever see it after the respray when it was pink?
