Title: subframe problem
Post by: Bdub on 06 January 2004, 15:23
Hi,
I read on here a few weeks ago that there is a common problem with a subframe bolt, or something else which splits and has to be welded.

Does anyone know about this and what should I be checking. mines got alot of miles on it so I think i ought to check it?

yep, happened to mine a while back

basically the captive nut within the chassis that the subframe bolts into shears its welds meaning you cant get any real purchase on the nut. i.e. u cant tighten it fully, it'll just keep turning

i took mine to a welder my mechanic recommended and he simply cut a whole in the chassis re-welded the captive nut then welded the cut hole in the chassis

cost me ?40 for one side

Cheers Gambit,
Is it a carpets out job or is it welded from the outside?

Which bolts is it - I assumme it must be bolted to the front vallance area and to the car floor area?

Cheers

i aint got a digi cam sorry

just get the car up on a set of ramps and try tightening each sub frame bolt, if u cant tighten it then the welds have broke
