Title: how much to change a cam belt?
Post by: jethro on 03 October 2006, 13:25
car just failed its mot.
not all bad, it needs a new sidelight bulb, headlight adjust and a new outer cv joint cover (sumin like that).
advises to get sorted, pas belt is lose, dodgy tyre (loads of cracks in side wall), back drivers side brake does not lock up on the rollers, (sumin about the handbrake)

the best bit was the 10 inch crack in the windscreen passed! still, waiting for the rac at the mo to sort out the windscreen cos its chipped to buggery.

how much should a garage (not a vw dealer) charge to change a cam belt and tensioner? mine was last done in the last century, i think!

I was going to take mine into a garage.  But it really is an easy job.  Took about 45 minutes.

the trouble and strifes car is off the road (old lady at a junction grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr), i have to get my golf going again, quick smart or i'll have no nooky for ever...........................
so i figured it would be quicker to put it in a garage and get them to do it for me, and stump up some cash. not to much though, or i'll buy me a strobe and do it meself. just wondering how much its gonna cost.

If you use genuine VAG belt and tensioner it will be in the order of £80 at a garage (£40 parts & £40 one hour labour).
It's a job I wish I had the balls to do but allways pay coz I don't wanna bend a valve!!!

Providing you don't start the car with the belt off (which would be rather daft ) you can just pull the old belt off and put the new one on - then you just need to get the timing checked, but unless the timing was already out it should still be fine so shouldn't cost more than a drink for the nice man with the timing gun  :smug:

Anything from £100 to £200 depending where you live. Also if its got no PAS then obviously it will be quicker and cheaper.

I'm going to get a mechanic mate to do mine and I'm buying the parts. I've had a look on www.vwspares.co.uk (http://www.vwspares.co.uk) and have got the following list:

CAMBELT: 1.8 16v - Genuine 027109119C - £21.22  http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2628
CAMBELT TENSIONER: 1.8 16v - Genuine 051109243 - £32.30 http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2629

Also doing the
ALTERNATOR BELT: 1.8 16v - Dayco 10.0950 - £2.00 http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1594

And...
POWER STEERING BELT - I'm confused by the 2 parts for sale and don't know which one is right for my car? There is...
1.8 16v 86-91 (upto 1G-MW-240000) Dayco 10.0735 £1.57  http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1607
1.8 16v 91-92 (from 1G-MW-240001) Dayco 10.0635 £1.61 http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2144

My car is a J-reg 1991 Mk2 Gti 16v

Any advice would be appreciated.  Also..is there anything else worth changing whilst this work is being done?

now me car has an mot- 90 quid for a new cv joint gaiter, bulb and mot. talking to a lad in work and he says changing the gaiter is a swine, so i gladly handed the cash over. thing was, wife wanted me to get my golf sorted for tomorrow (hospital appointment miles away), so i stump up the cash and get it done, then we only go and get a courtesy car! 05 plate micra- want a peice of sh*t

any way, spoke to the bloke in the garage and he said 45 quid labour plus parts. didn't seem to bad, so i booked it in (no rush now the crap micra is on the drive)

Providing you don't start the car with the belt off (which would be rather daft ) you can just pull the old belt off and put the new one on - then you just need to get the timing checked, but unless the timing was already out it should still be fine so shouldn't cost more than a drink for the nice man with the timing gun  :smug:

how likely is the cam shaft to move as you slip the belt off? that would shag the timing wouldn't it?
tried looking in the haynes manual about it, might as of looked at a dog turd for all the sense it made to me..................................

I won't move unless the engine its turned over or you turn the large nut on the end

This might come in handy if you're doing it yourself
