Hi all, im new to the site, so go easy!
Always fancied a mk2 gti, and was looking for a bit of a winter project when I came about a knackered 16v on ebay :cool:
Havent bought the thing yet, but it would be a bit of a rebuild job as its in need of some hefty TLC.
Anyway - Heard a lot of talk about transplanting the Audi 1.8 turbo engine in, have been told its not that big a job, anyone been there and any advice?
Its one of these written on a napkin projects that may never make it any further, but heres the idea:
Strip shell, repair bodywork, respray to original colour, install rollcage, dash, bucket seats and as little else as possible;
Rebuild 2nd hand Audi A4 1.8t engine, uprated head gasket and recon turbo, decent clutch, golf gearbox, megasquirt DIY ECU, custom intercooler, 2.5" bore exhaust and hopefully a reliable 200bhp with standard internals.
Obviously a brake / suspension / wider wheels upgrade would follow.
Any advice??

sounds like a plan but don't use a a4 engine, there are various other 20vt's that are transverse which make the conversion easier.. ie a3's, tt's, golfs etc. also the BAM (and AMK?) code engines are 225bhp as standard so no need to go messing with megasquirt. also if doing a 20vt swap if you have the original clocks keys loom etc would make the conversion even easier. you can get round the factory imobiliser if you don't have the keys etc by sending your ecu off to revo or someone similar.....

Are there any details of this on the forum?
