Title: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: GemGTI on 27 September 2006, 23:08
I think the time has come to sell Aubs.  Just heard from the garage today that the nearside rear sill is extremely corroded. Also they put a new speedo cable on and the speedo still doesnt work so they might have to strip the gearbox or something? I really can't carry on with this as I just don't have the money and everything just seems to keep going wrong. Its never a simple fix. Always an expensive job! I'm very upset at the thought of selling her but think its the only answer. I'm spending my whole wage every month on the car at the moment and just cant see an end to the problems. The only other thing I thought about doing was storing her untill I have the money, but it seems a shame to keep such a lovely car off the road for maybe years. I think a mk4 is the way to go for now. But it wont be as much fun driving! (No offense to mk4 owners). I can't believe I'm selling

Gemma I think you should get it fixed and store it and get a daily driver... you have spent so much on it, it will be hard to get your money back and I know how much you love that car, your just kick yourself once you have sold it...

Just use the car for the summer periods and take to the shows if you can afford to do that?

Dont sell , you will only regret it , every time you see one at a show or on the road youll miss it

If you have spent loads then its worth going that bit extra to keep it!
Yea get a £300 motor off ebay and keep the Golf until you can afford to fix it.
You know it makes sense!

dont sell it. just stick it in a garage & get yourself a cheap runaround! then fix it when you get time & money

are you sure it aint the clocks that are banjo'd?? i assume they tested the clocks by just stick a drill on the gearbox end of the cable and spining it.

From reading your posts (and also that little segment in Golf+ magazine you did a while back) its clear you adore this car, you'll regret selling it so DON'T!

Replacing a sill isnt the end of the world, pm me if you want a quote for the repair and if you dont mind driving to b'ham for the work. We also have a mars red (pink) 1600 mk1 gti with complete and good condition engine/box ready to strip and scrap if there are any other bits needed.

If you can afford to run a mk4 as a daily and keep the mk1 for weekends then do that, or get something cheaper for a daily (mk2/mk3).

Nothing worse than having to toy with this idea.... :(

i certainly dont envy your decision but there are so many people who are prepared to help you round here, might just be worth persevering a little longer. Its a stunning little car and after all youve done id keep going.

More f**king bad news!

To get the speedo working again they need to strip the gearbox! So I'm looking at minimum of £300 to fix. Then there's the corrosion,

I just can't afford this car. However much I love it I just can't afford to keep it. How many things can possibly go wrong at the same time??!!!

Gutted
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: golfpro on 29 September 2006, 15:58
then how much are you selling it for?
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: GemGTI on 29 September 2006, 16:18
I don't know. Need to work it out. Its insured for £2500. Need to gather together all my invoices (which means chasing some unreliable mechanics!). Then I'll get it valued. Wouldn't really want to take less than £2500 or its not worth selling imo.

Personally I wouldn't want to part with such a nice example.

Store it and SORN it. Buy a Mk2 Golf or Polo as a run around to drive until you can get the money to fix it.
I bought a Mk2 Polo off ebay for £150 with MOT and Tax, just to run around in.

Just don't sell it, please, it's a beauty.

gem dont do it! I'd take paul up on his offer of sortin ur speedo out.. plus ur just off the m1 anyway, so its direct to get to him in rotherham! (that reminds me i need mine setting up)

Gem, seriously don't do it!

Its not just that though, its this corrosion thats worrying me, and I cant keep forking out hue amounts of cash every month. It really is getting rediculous now! I really don't want to sell it but it looks like ive got no choice.

Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: [han] on 29 September 2006, 16:52
how much are you lookin at for the sill? have you shopped around?
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: Len on 29 September 2006, 20:48
Even I can replace a sill. Cant repaint it though, well not good enough to match the rest of your great car!

Surely somehow we can club together and help????? Be a great shame for you to have to sell it!
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: GemGTI on 29 September 2006, 20:57
Thanks Len, and everyone else for your comments. I'm just worried even if I do fix this, how long till the next big thing needs doing?  Going to pick it up from the garage tomorrow, still with no speedo, so I can't drive it till its fixed or the mileage wont be genuine. My poor car.

Whats wrong with the speedo ? ive just taken the dash pod out of mine and ill post you mine FOC , the welding , i dont know where your based but my brother works in a body shop , the other day we , de-locled and de-handles some chavvy fiesta in 2 days with working door pops , im willin to do the work for free if you can get the car here would be a cryin shame if you let it go

Post by: GemGTI on 30 September 2006, 16:17
I'm in leeds. The speedo cable has come loose inside the gearbox. The guy at the vw garage explained it all to me but I'm crap at remembering and understanding stuff like that! They have done loads of tests and the next thing to do is strip the gearbox.

As for the sill, when they showed me it I was acutally already aware of it. I was told it would need doing when I had my mot done in march, was just trying to wait till then to get it done as cant afford it right now.

Reaaalllllyyyy dont want to sell it

Post by: Veedubgt18v on 30 September 2006, 16:53
then dont. best bet is get a cheap run around, garage the mk1 till u can afford to fix it then your all good!

corrosion always scares people but its actually not that bad if its sorted properly, aircooled owners know wat im talking about lol

keep it keep it keep it! get a runaround polo or sumthing

Just found a £200 fiat punto in auto trader. 6 months mot, tax, 1997 p reg, service history, 68000 on clock. So was thinking of sorning mine until mot is due in march, and in the meantime run around in this for the next 6 months. What do people think? Then I'd hopefully be able to save some cash over the winter and get everthing done when I get mot. I'd get nearly £170 back from road tax and could reduce insurance to f&t only. Hmmmm...only thing is the poor golf would be sat under a car cover outside for the winter.

i wouldn worry about that darl, seems like a good idea to me. surely a cr cover is more than some people provide?

sounds like a plan, just dont do anything hasty and get rid of it.

and car covers are pretty good or short term storage. just get some of that stuff that people use in caravans to absorb extra moisture in the air then it wont get damp inside. also start it now and again to keep everything nice bay side

Post by: gibby on 03 October 2006, 13:02
Well I'm going to disagree with everyone on this and say I think you should sell it. Anyone who uses this site regularly knows how many problems you've had and had to sort out only for something else to go a day or week later. I've said before Gem that I admire your enthusiasm, optimism and your determination to keep this car original etc, but there needs to come a point where enough is enough. :undecided:

There are other mk1's out there to be found that may not give as much grief, on the other hand they may be worse. Good luck Gem with whatever you decide. Is it only a tintop you want though as I may have a nice mk1 cab for sale soon if you're interested.

Post by: Len on 03 October 2006, 13:14
Better the Devil ya know I say!
I acknowledge that a lot has gone wrong with Gem's car but as she has had most of the work done now, surely there's not much else to go wrong on it!

Oh and that from the horder of cars! When ya selling the Cab then Gibby?
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: gibby on 03 October 2006, 13:35
I agree with better the devil you know under most circumstances, but it's just one thing after another and there needs to be a line drawn where enough is enough.

I know I'm getting to be a bit of a VW horder (that's horder not whoreder  ), I think it's time to sell one of them but as the Rallye is a new toy, my son wont allow me to sell my camper so it looks like it's going to be the cab, I'm in no real rush yet as it's all bought and paid for at the moment, but for the right money it can go anytime.
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: Len on 03 October 2006, 15:33
I just think that surely she must be over the worst of it and its such a good looking car!

But at the same time I can see what ur saying Gibby.

Great shame is all.

So Han can have it in December then? Please say yes! Oh and I am referring to the Cab!
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: gibby on 03 October 2006, 15:45
I had to ring Han up the other week as a local girl had expressed an interest in my cab, there's nothing in concrete yet so it's still up for grabs.
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: Len on 03 October 2006, 15:50
I think its fair to say that there will be a lot of happy people if Han does buy your Cab!
Can we all wait until December I wonder?
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: [han] on 03 October 2006, 19:47
FYI i have the money now, i cant bring myself to buy gibbys.
Title: Re: Time to say goodbye...
Post by: GemGTI on 03 October 2006, 21:28
Thanks for your advice Gibby. I really don't know what to do. For now, I have decided to fix the car (if I can get it done cheaply enough!) Then sorn her for the winter (and get some money back on tax and insurance) untill the mot in march, then put through her through the mot, then decide - sell, or keep for summer and see what happens? That way if I do sell I'll get the best money as she'll have a full or nearly full mot. If I drive her for a while and nothing seems to be going wrong, I might keep her. What do people think of this idea?

Gem, you do what feels right for you. I had my cab go wrong three times in the space of a couple of weeks in July and it really p1ssed me off so you've got the patience of a saint my girl.

If anyone on here needs a bit of car luck it's you that's for sure.

It sounds to me like keeping it is the only option. You're hardly likely to see your money back on a Mk1 with structural corrosion and gearbox issues.

The sill shouldn't be too bad to fix, get some recomendations from fellow dubbers in your area to where to get it done. I've grown up around the motor trade and am only too aware of the pound signs that flash up when a female motorist with a nice old car pulls up onto the forecourt.

Try and find a good secondhand box locally ( I have one for sale at the moment but I'm not exactly local) and I'm sure you could persuade a couple of fellow dubbers to give you a hand fitting it. It would cost a lot less than £300 and thats including tea and biscuits for the labourers.

As for storage, is there a chance that you could rent a lock up nearby? Some councils rent them out at pretty competitive rates. Much better in the long run than a car cover and your driveway.

Thanks for this advice stew, I was wondering about this. I've heard you can rent a council garage for £150 a year, and I'd only need it for 6 months. I'd rather she was kept nice and cosy warm and dry!

crikey, and i thought i had problems with mine, ive spent sh!tloads on cosmetics, and this is to restor it to stock look on a mk2 ryder..

head gasket swap, head skimmed etc, because it was DOA..

engine smoking, valve stems/seals gone expected.. got it home, couldnt do a thing..

new engine.. carb wont idle properly..

new weber, manifold blocked off, no braking..

unblock manifold.. pin and retaining clip circle tihng drops out, time to source a new servo

and everything else between.. and i've owned the car literally, all of 2 months.. had to change all cylinders, pads, discs.. they were bare metal.. thin gis i fell in love with the tihng, and no amtter how much it annoyed me, i couldnt see it go, because i knew id regret losing it after putting so much into it, ive bene working on it with my mate and my dad.. and learnt hell of a lot from them and it..

and the satisfaction of driving it in a bang on working state, or what it hought was, was amazing.. and i know it can only get better, and hey, i dont have a job, student loan thats ot to last me, and thats it.. oh and no drive or garage or anything to work on anymore.. oops

really wish youu all the luck with it Gem, the car looks amazing, one of the first i noticed when i visted this place first.. hope you can do it!

Thanks guys, everyone is so kind & helpful. I think I'm gonna get my gearbox speedo thingy repaired rather than get a 2nd hand one. It would be just my luck if I bought a 2nd hand one then that b*ggered up! I think Joe (tvr golf) is going to do the sill for me.
