Title: How bout an F.A.Q's section?
Post by: golfpro on 20 September 2006, 09:56
Been reading through a lot of the same threads recently and its really starting to get on my titties. God knows how many times people have asked about the difference between an 8 and a 16 valve. God knows how many mk2 vs mk3 threads there have been. And I think even God has lost count of how many times we have had pannel filter/induction kit questions. This is discounting of course the tyre size/wheel size/lowering amount/arch work questions.

I know there are threads stickied up regularly and these are very helpful, once you have looked through them all, and there is a search feature which never ever seems to be used, but I just thought a frequently asked questions page with some advice and opinions would be an obvious place for people to look before they ask the same things.

Sorry, rant over, what do you all think?

Phil, it doesn't have to be Admin or a mod that sets up an FAQ thread so why not have a go yourself ? You could do a thread with different mk headings and then copy and paste from other people that have given the questions and answers, keep it as an updated thread and maybe ask jv to give only you access to that thread so noone can spam it.

You could take it further and ask people to PM you if they have had good advice and on which thread and then update your FAQ.

As already said, people may not read them, but at least it gives Slick something else to be mardy about !

Not really, it's just a bit of copying and pasting into a thread from other people's answers.

If people want to make suggestions for the forum and I do think this is a good one, then people might need to get involved and do some of the work to bring it to fruition.

Not really, I'm just not as stupid as I might look.

Len, I didn't say I would help Phil I was just pointing out how it might be done. I think you should do it though, it would give you something to focus on for the good of the forum !

glad you like the idea gibby. I wouldnt mind puttin a little work in to get it running if thats ok with everyone who didnt like the idea, but would appreciate any advice or help anyone can give.

So do you think I should do a thread in each mk's page for this?  Would I be able to sticky the threads in each so they didnt get lost over time?

I like the idea of people pm-ing me their things to put in there and then I can update it whenever there is something new to add. Il PM JV and see what he hays about all this and we can take things from there.

If jv is ok with it then do it and ask for only you, admin and globals to be able to add or delete etc. I'd say either put an FAQ for each mk or just do one FAQ in the garage section, if you do the latter you need to make sure you have headings for the relevant mk if you do it that way, e.g.

mk1

Q) Car wont start

A) Check petrol
A) Check fuel filler neck

mk2
Q) Car wont start
A) Buy a mk1 !

We can sticky the original thread(s) once you start it/them. If jv says go for it then run it how you want it, but it needs to be only a few that can post or edit it then it doesn't get spammed so you could advertise this by telling people what you're planning on doing and getting them to PM you with questions and answers to put into it.

I'll definitely do the Mk 3 stuff for ya Phil. We dont seem to have any active Mods in there atm!

I will always do something for the good of the Forum Gibby - except leave!

thanks for the offer of help len! Iv pm'd JV the idea and will await his say. If he likes the thought then along with the mods and admin we can hopefully get a couple of useful pages going.

i think its a good idea, but if the thread gets long, then people arent going to readit to find their answers! think its guna be a case of tellin people to use the search, or post a link to another topic in their thread. cos we're always guna get twits who dont read!

there will be a way it can work though.. but tbh im not being much help am i... sorry!
please explai to me if i have this wrong! :)

Electrical
Q.
A.

Fuel, Exhaust etc
Q.
A.

Styling
Q.
A.

etc...just an idea like..  :undecided:

but then thereads will be mahoosive in each section with common probs.... "SEARCH FUNCTION" just need to put up with the questions and direct people in right direction! lol

im beginning to agree with ya han. Think threads will end up huge and no one will end up lookin through them. The bottom line is just use the search function first isnt it!

not being funny...... but itsn't this kind of what the "maintenance and info" section was designed for? i know not every mk has one of these child boards but that was kind of the idea.

but to be honest it doesn't get looked at as often as it should either! :P
Title: Re: How bout an F.A.Q's section?
Post by: [han] on 03 October 2006, 22:15
guess its up to us to keep directing them.. but it is annoyin they dnt read...

the info is there, and new stuff can be asked.. maybe we need to have a word with section mods, and highlight things for "stickying" but tbh i think you guys r doin a good j ob, and without this forum i'd be screwed!

awww man.. i love you mods!

i was gonna mention the maintenance boards..possibly combine the two?! i have to admit, wen i was lookin for stuff on the polo, i did actually check the f.a.q's bit first..sumtimes its easier for a newb to look rather than post a question..

Did anyone mention a general faq..like to put the "how to post a pic" and "how do i read my pms" bollix in?
could also combine it with the mod intros..
mite be wise having the new members section as the first port of call so to speak..and/or if possible a link to them wen they first join, or like link it to a welcome email they get before actually getting on the forum..

i dont even know if they get a welcome email, its been that long..
